Hurricane Sandy caused major devastation on the Jersey Shore.
It certainly disrupted plans for the Jersey Shore Running Club’s Annual RunAPalooza which is held every year in April but the organizers were determined not to let someone named “Sandy” stop the show and it is all set to go for April 20, 2013 with some exciting changes and additions.
The event has been held for 16 years as a benefit for Special Olympics New Jersey.
The RunAPalooza courses extend from Seaside Heights to Asbury Park, N.J. and it would be virtually impossible to do the runs as planned.
The Asbury Park Half Marathon now has a new course for this year that encompasses Asbury Park, Loch Arbour, Allenhurst, and Deal.
In place of the Relay this year there will be a Five Mile Run to be known as the Jersey Shore Five and will include parts of the half marathon course. There will be team and individual competitions.
Both events will start and finish near Asbury Park’s Convention Hall and include the traditional giant Post Race Party inside with an expo, food, beer, soda and more included for all registered runners.
And to make the event more inclusive a Virtual Run has been added labeled the Restore the Shore Virtual Run.
Anyone can sign up for only $10.00 and run or walk distances of 5k, 5 Miles, the half marathon distance of 13.1 miles or a full marathon of 26.2.
Runners can run as an individual or with a team of friends anywhere they like any time before April 15, 2013. Runners then will report their finish times, distance and location and be recorded in the RunAPalooza results.
There will be awards for individuals and teams who send in photos of their run in various categories such a best dressed, most exotic location, funniest, etc.
RunAPalooza will continue to be a fund raiser for Special Olympics New Jersey and will also be used to raise funds to help rebuild and restore the Jersey Shore. Portions of the funds will go to the towns most impacted by the storm to help rebuild and restore such things as boardwalks, public buildings, bathrooms, water fountains, etc. Federal and state funding will not cover the entire cost of all the rebuilding and hopefully this event will make a contribution to assist.
RunAPalooza this year will be a Special Event to help rebuild and restore the Jersey Shore.
Registration for all the events is now open on line.
