Rihanna and Chris Brown have both come out and straight up denied that they are together again. The two said in individual interviews recently that they’re just friends and nothing more. Rihanna returned to “Saturday Night Live” for the fourth time last night, alongside host Anne Hathaway. The singer performed two songs off her new album “Unapologetic”. The first song was the album’s first hit single “Diamonds”, which was described as “odd” by the Hollywood Reporter yesterday. But in her second performance of the night, she redeemed herself with a, “sultry, slow ballad with references to her tumultuous on-again, off-again relationship with Chris Brown”. Rihanna performed the song called “Stay” which is also off the new album.
MTV noted today that Rihanna broke with her normally aggressive onstage persona Saturday night when she took the stage and played her “Unapologetic” ballad, “Stay”. They said how the singer doesn’t usually slow it down for her live TV performances, but she that she did so on “SNL”, allowing fans an emotional preview of her Nov. 19 album release.
In “Stay”, Rihanna sings about a broken relationship, perhaps alluding to her tumultuous one with fellow singer Chris Brown. “Funny how you’re the broken one, but I’m the only one who needed saving”, she sings. “I can’t live without you, and it takes me all the way, I want you to stay”, the song goes on.
Rihanna, 24, told Bravo’s Andy Cohen, “No. Not together”, when asked if she is dating Chris during a Facebook Live chat Wednesday. Likewise, 23 year-old Chris Brown gave a similar emphatic denial in an interview with Power 106 radio station in L.A. Friday.
Rihanna and Chris Brown face persistent rumors that they’ve reconciled since they took their relationship public last month. The two were sighted at various clubs, concerts and even spent nights together in hotels. The two famously split after he assaulted her in his car back in 2009, for which he is still under probation.
Responding to Cohen’s questions about the status of their relationship, Rihanna added, “If I had it my way, it would be really nobody’s business”. That’s ironic given one of her new songs is collaboration track with Brown called “Nobodies Business”.
Rihanna insisted the title refers to the fact that her life is lived under such scrutiny and is constantly in the public, that she just needs to keep a “little bit” for herself that’s private and her own.
Chris Brown said, “Me and her have history and me and her are definitely always going to be best of friends. And we’re working on our friendship now”.
Perhaps more telling were the somewhat cryptic words he used describe his relationship with Rihanna. Chris asserted, “As far as our personal life, I think people just got to give it a chance – or not even give it a chance, but shut the hell up. It’s me. At the end of the day, whatever opinion they have ain’t going to change nothing I’m doing”.
