Here’s a nice little Christmas present for you. It’s all wrapped up in parchment, chains, and padlock for a bow. The tag reads, “The Constitution Doesn’t Apply Here!” In the Constitution Free Zones (CFZ), your rights guaranteed by the Constitution can be arbitrarily suspended under the guise of homeland security. The implications of such a far-reaching invasion by the federal government are ominous. A legal citizen can be searched, his or her property seized, and who then may be summarily detained without any forethought by federal agents given to Fourth Amendment Rights, which should protect American citizens from such intrusive and unlawful behaviors; and it happens all the time. Just ask L. Cruz. She is a legal citizen who was harassed by border patrol agents at a check-point in September of 2012. Similarly, Craig Johnson of San Diego was detained for several hours at an entry-point on the California/Mexico border in 2008. He too is an American citizen who is also an associate music professor at a California university.
You say that you’ve never heard of the CFZ? Well, you’re not alone. Much of the American population hasn’t either. That’s another aspect of this edict, which should give us both pause and suspicion about the actions of the federal government. The measures that define the CFZ were enacted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) during the height of last decade’s terrorism scare. It was upheld by the congress, executive branch, and never challenged directly by the Supreme Court. Essentially, the CFZ defines a 100 mile strip of land, which runs along the interior borders of American territory. Within this zone, federal agents can conduct extra-Constitutional operations including, but not limited to, illegal search and seizure, detainment without charge or legal representation, and general dehumanization tactics to solicit private information.
The Southern Frontier has always been an area that warranted officials to implement extraordinary measures to secure the border from illegal crossings, firearms, and drugs. However, the expanded powers granted by the DHS affect American citizens far inside the interior and many of the large metropolitan areas of Border States. Effectually, the CFZ affects two-thirds of the population with Hawaii, Michigan, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and Florida residing 100% within its confines! A security implementation that was once confined to border regions has been widened via the federal government. Ergo, millions of life-long American citizens can be subjugated to the whims of zealous federal agents. This egregious suspension of Constitutional rights may not stop within 100 miles though.
As of late, the debate over stricter enforcement of gun laws has reached the forefront of concern in congress and the White House. The implication is that Second Amendment rights can die an unmerciful death too. Clearly, if we didn’t know that the federal government had expanded its police-state 100 miles inward, then they will orchestrate equal obscurity when they decide to blanket the entire nation. If our Fourth Amendment rights can be squashed under-boot, then who’s to say that our Second Amendment rights can’t be suspended? Illegal search and seizure to confiscate whatever firearms you legally own deemed illegal on an arbitrary basis goes together like beans and rice to those who see the Constitution as a hindrance to fundamental change.
Bottom-line, our Constitutional rights are in serious jeopardy. The papal champion of human rights is conspicuously silent. Yet he was reelected under the premise that he would indeed show mercy, compassion, and fairness to minorities with comprehensive immigration reform. He was reelected with the help of an overwhelming majority of Latinos who stand to lose their Constitutional rights along with the rest of the population. He was reelected to uphold the Constitution. He has not.
To President Obama, the Constitution is a weed in the flowerbed of Marxism. It is a stone in the path “forward” that must be rolled away. It is an obsolete document that needs to be rewritten in order to reflect an evolving centralized authority. The Constitution is our gun against this arising tyranny and must be protected at all costs. I urge you to contact your congress person(s) and speak-out about this overreach of government.
