Rick Warren outdueled host Piers Morgan during an interview on CNN broadcast today in a far-ranging discussion which included the Scriptures and the Constitution.
Piers asked Warren at one point, “Don’t you believe that since the U.S. Constitution has changd with the times your beliefs must change with the times?”
The pastor of Saddleback Church replied that his belief system was not based on the Constitution.
“The Constitution is man-made so it is not perfect. It’s not the basis of my beliefs. My belief system is based on the Scriptures which come from God,” the author and pastor told Morgan.
Warren said that while the Constitution has been amended to make changes, the Bible doesn’t need to be amended.
“The Scriptures are the truth from God,” said Warren who started his church 30 years ago in Southern California with one family besides his own in an apartment.
Under his direction, the church now has 20,000 attendance each Sunday with many more attending in small groups during the week.
Morgan ended his interview with the question, “What does Christmas mean?”
“The story of Christmas is the babe was born in a manger, grew up and lived a sinless life, died on the cross and gave us a home in heaven. No matter how bad our pasts are we can be forgiven,” the articulate Warren answered.
Warren then made an analogy as follows, “How would you feel if you gave someone a gift for Chrismas and they never opened it? Suppose you came back to their home the next year and the gift was setting there unopened in the corner?”
“That would be offensive. God gave us the gift of life in heaven. Many people are given this gift, but they never open it. They never do anything with it,” Warren said.
Warren said he gives 91% of what he earns to God.
“When Kay and I started out our church 30 years ago we gave 10%. That is called a tithe. We increased it to 11 % the second year. We try to increase it every year. If we receive a raise or a bonus we increase it by 4%.”
Warren said, “God gave his only Son. Why shouldn’t we give? There is nothing wrong with being rich. The only thing that is wrong is dying rich.”
Warren is the author of the bestselling book “The Purpose Driven Life.” He has recentlly written another book entitled “Purpose of Christmas.”
He was born in San Jose, California and is a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in addition to several other schools.
