Kate Winslet’s spirits may be flying high after her recent wedding, but the actress may actually blast off for a real space trip soon. Sir Richard Branson, celebrated owner of Virgin Galactic, offered the 37-year-old Oscar-winning thespian a free ticket on his SpaceShipTwo suborbital space plane.
Branson’s sweeping gesture was offered as a wedding gift, but it may also point back to Winslet’s rescuing of the British billionnaire’s 90-year-old mother from an August 2011 fire at his British Virgin Islands retreat.
Winslet happens to be the new bride of Branson’s nephew Ned RocknRoll (previously named Ned Abel Smith), who not coincidentally works for Branson’s Virgin Group.
What is SpaceShipTwo?
The high-altitude craft is expected to blast off in the next year or so, carrying six passengers and two pilots 60 miles upwards for a two-hour space tour, before gliding back to Earth. Tickets go for $200,000.
So far, prospective passengers include Russell Brand, Stephen Hawking, Ashton Kutcher, and others.
How did Kate Winslet marry?
Winslet was wed to the 34-year-old RockNRoll before Christmas in a secret ceremony in a barn in the Catskill Mountains.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Winslet’s Titanic co-star, walked the bride down the aisle during the unannounced proceedings. Close friends and family members apparently learned about the couple’s marriage in a post-vow Skype session.
The marriage is RockNRoll’s second and Winslet’s third. Earlier, the actress was married to British producer Jim Threapleton in 1998, followed by British director Sam Mendes in 2003.
Perhaps the starlet was seeing stars. Fans can only hope Winslet’s third whirl is considerably more grounded, particularly after the actress completes her space voyage, thanks to Virgin’s Uncle Branson.
