Today we’re looking at the foxL v2 by soundmatters. The foxL v2 is a mobile Bluetooth speaker with sound that isn’t instantly apparent based on its diminutive size.

Soundmatters boasts that foxL was developed by soundmatter’s founder, Dr. Godehard Guenther – a physicist and former NASA engineer. Dr. Guenther says on their site:
“Music is a big part of my life, yet so is travel. There weren’t any really small hifi-quality portable loudspeakers – so utilizing a number of our patented and proprietary technologies, I developed one myself.”
But did the good doctor succeed in his chosen task?
In my opinion, the answer is a clear and loud yes. Clear and loud like the sound you’ll find in the foxL v2. The engineering really shows as this speaker easily outshines the competition in clarity. It’s also one of the loudest you’ll find on the market. With a size equivalent to your basic movie theater hot dog bun, it easily pops in your travel bag or even your pocket. It uses Bluetooth or an Aux in to grab music from your audio source. It uses proprietary “twoofer” technology, “tweeters that woof” to achieve the unique sound. On the Bluetooth side, it uses the newer AptX technology which promotes cd quality sound over Bluetooth. Remember that your source needs to output Aptx sound as well for this to work. You have to really listen to feel the difference in quality because there are a lot of great Bluetooth speakers out there already. The foxL v2 does stand out though. The other thing that stands out of course is the price. If you are judging the speaker based on its size you would compare it to offerings from Jambox, Jabra, and Logitech to name a few, this does outshine them all but at about double the price of some options. If your choice is between this speaker and the Jambox, you shouldn’t let marketing decide for you. The bass is astounding when you see how big the speaker is. The jambox can push out some bass, but seems to suffer a bit from its small size. The foxL v2 is even smaller with more bass output. Voice clarity is clear and precise and across the spectrum of sound I couldn’t find an issue considering the speakers size. It’s still not going to beat out a nice shelf system, but it’s enough for a small to medium sized room. It also has a very capable speakerphone built into it with a single button to answer and end calls. Again, you need to appreciate sound enough to pay the price. If you want more than decent sound at a much lower price, the previously reviewed Logitech mobile boombox is my clear choice overall. At the higher end though, the foxL v2 has earned a strong recommendation from me. Know that you won’t be disappointed when you get this thing in front of you.
Thank you again to soundmatters for supplying their product for review.
Main advantage: SOUND, bass output, small size, and rechargeable battery
Main concern: price, only charges through included adapter or mini usb cable (micro usb is the smartphone standard of course)
Unique features: included lanyard and an external subwoofer connection port
How much: $199.99 from amazon.com
Alternatives: Jawbone’s jambox, solemate by jabra, mobile boombox from Logitech, and many others
Is it worth buying: To reiterate, in the higher end mobile Bluetooth speaker category, I haven’t seen a better choice. Highly recommended.
