People close to former David Petraeus said Paula Broadwell, the woman with whom he allegedly had an affair, was “in love” with the retired general, according to an ABC News Nov. 11 report.
Others, such as David Bixler, believe it is unlikely Broadwell engaged in such a tryst.

“I have some serious question about who is connecting these dots and how… Paula Broadwell is not the type… she isn’t,” the double amputee who met the writer at a charity function in 2010 told ABC.

According to the news media outlet, Petraeus told friends about the affair saying it began in Aug. 2011 after he left the military.

The individuals closest to Petraeus, 60, say Broadwell, 40, was “gushy” over him, which made them believe she was “in love with him,” according to ABC.

As one of the retired general’s biographers, Broadwell was embedded in Afghanistan with Petraeus and the troops and gained unique access to him during the war.

Reports indicate at one point she was concerned about another woman getting too close to Petraeus and sent her threatening emails. The woman, now identified as Jill Kelley, a State Dept. liaison to the military’s Joint Special Operations Command, contacted the FBI. During the agency’s investigation, they found sexually explicit emails between Broadwell and Petraeus.

On Nov. 9, Petraeus tendered his resignation to the president and released a statement which said, “…I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair… Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours…”
