The Russians streamed the women’s all-around final at Universiades, which began at something like 3 a.m. west coast time. Here’s the blow-by-blow from the stream, just in case you missed it:
Elsa Garcia, vault: Good high Yurchenko 1.5, bends her legs right at the end but well done even so.
Ksenia Afanasyeva, vault: DTY, well done. Tighter and faster twist than we’ve seen in the past from her. Evident that she’s been working a harder vault. And a wave for the camera, aw! 14.95.
Aliya Mustafina, vault: In yellow and black today, very dramatic. All that heavy black eye makeup makes her look like a Bond girl. DTY, two small steps back and a bit offline. The usual leg stuff. Did it better in team finals the other day. 14.75.
Hannah Whelan; bars: Jaeger. Tkatchev. Legs apart on Pak. Double pike with a big step forward. 13.75.
Yu Minobe, vault: Falls forward on Yurchenko 1.5. 12.4.
Pak Sin Hyang, beam: Really pretty, very clean work. Just solid, too. No real unique combos, but a roundoff, bhs, double pike dismount, and she falls forward and puts her hands down. Shame! She totally had that.
Carmen Horvat, floor: 1.5 to flyspring (did she mean to put her arms down? Probably not.) Front layout second pass. These Russian commentators rival the Japanese for talkativeness — you can’t hear Horvat’s music at all over them. Front layout full to end. 11.8.
Kang Yong Mi, beam: Punch front. Front aerial to jumps, won’t get connection bonus. Bhs, layout, wild but saved. Side somie. Switch to side aerial. Low double pike but makes it.
Jana Sikulova, beam: Wobbly bhs to layout. Wolf full, unusual! Switch half, small check. Switch side, much better. Punch front. Front layout full dismount.
Rita Oliviera, vault: Handspring front tuck. 13.1.
Ksenia Afanasyeva, bars: Her make it or break it event…Toe stalder to toe Shaposh to Pak, toe Khorkina II, toe blind (tiny break) to Jaeger, full twisting double back with a step back. Quickly salutes the judges and runs away. I think that’s relief on her face!
Aliya Mustafina, bars: Huge roar for her from the crowd. Inbar full to Khorkina II to high, inbar stalder to Jaegr pike. Inbar full to Pak. Toe hecht to high, toe full to immediate full twisting double back, STUCK. Aliya does it again on this event! Brilliant routine.
Annika Urvikko, vault: Goes for handspring layout front full and falls, but props for trying! She didn’t pike down at all. 13.2.
Heo Seon Mi, beam: Irrelevant, but pretty spangled back leotard! Switch. Front aerial. Bhs, layout, good. Front somie. Side somie. Nearly comes off on full turn with leg at head. Double pike with big step back. The Korean coach is really pleased with this exercise.
Jana Sikulova, floor: One foot OOB on her handspring double front opening pass. Good double pike to end. 12.35? Something must have happened in the middle.
Ellie Black, bars: Jump to high, hop change, Jaeger, bail, toe stalder, toe hecht to high, full turn, toe front pike half. It’s no secret that bars isn’t her best event, but she was third after the first rotation and has two very good events coming up. Don’t count her out. 13.25.
Elsa Garcia, bars: Toe hecht to high, 1.5 to Jaeger pike and falls. Too bad! She looked great in the warmup. Toe stalder to toe Tkatchev, bail to toe hecht to high, blind to double front with a step. Looks a bit frustrated and disappointed, naturally.
Aliya Mustafina, beam: Front aerial to side somie, nicely done. Switch half to Onodi, no combo with the double turn. Then falls on the double turn. Oh Aliya, you need to fight harder to stay on! On the other hand, this really opens the door for Afanasyeva…Mustafina’s rest is clean, and her double tuck dismount is stuck cold. 14.05.
Karla Salazar, vault: Handspring front pike. 13.5.
Kim Bui, beam: Oh, nice! Roundoff to tao layout stepouts as a mount! When’s the last time we saw that? Bhs, layout to two feet. Switch to switch half. Working very well so far. Side aerial, step back. Jumps. Side somie. Double pike, stands right up, excellent routine! She seems very pleased, and she should be! 13.55. Given that Mustafina got 14.05 with a fall, that should be higher.
Angelina Kysla, floor: “Roxanne.” 1.5 to 2.5. Double pike to end. Nice routine. 13.0.
Yu Minobe, beam: Jump to scale. Roundoff, layout to two feet to scissone. That’s different! Side somie. Lovely full turns combo going different directions. Onodi to sheep. Switch. Double pike dismount. Beautiful set!
Hannah Whelan, floor: Opens with a whip to double tuck, but bounces both feet OOB. 2.5 to front layout, more bounces. I understand the floor is super bouncy in Kazan. Double pike. 12.75.
Ellie Black, beam: Double turn to full turn, hard and well done! Front pike, solid. Bhs, layout to two feet. I can’t get over how confident she is, how well she just plants her feet and stays. Side somie. Leap series. Punch front to wolf. 2.5 twist with a step forward. The only critique is that it’s a little light on the dance and heavy on the tricks. That’s the code, though. 14.5.
Ksenia Afanasyeva, beam: A huge chance for her here…Split ring leap. Side aerial to two feet. Two front aerials to split jump. Full turn with her leg up. Kotchetkova. The audience is applauding louder with ever trick she makes…big bend on her Tourjete half, and again on her Onodi. She’s doing her best to give it away, but she hasn’t fallen. Great double tuck dismount, nearly stuck. Boy…
Kim Bui, floor: Full in. Double tuck, bounce back. Tourjete full. Double pike. Getting a big hug from Pia Tolle. 13.5.
Dorina Boczogo, vault: Yurchenko full, just explosive, small hop back. 14.0.
Hannah Whelan, vault: Yurchenko full, kind of a carbon copy of Boczogo’s, actually, with the form and the hop and everything. 14.05.
Ellie Black, floor: 2.5 walkout to double full, man that’s hard, and what’s amazing is she can actually do it to a triple full. Front full walkout to double tuck and puts her hands down. Went for the stick, very aggressive out of the front full, but just a bit unlucky inopening up early. Front double full to end. Getting consolation from coach Dave Kikuchi.
Elsa Garcia, floor: “The Legend of Zelda.” Sits Arabian double front first pass. Saves 2.5 twist third pass, barely. 12.7.
Ksenia Afanasyeva, floor: New floor routine for her. Double layout. Two whips to triple full. Stunning turn combo. Split ring to Tourjete full. 2.5 to layout front. Double pike to end! The commentator is crying, “Bravo, bravo!” and showering praises in effusive, rapid-fire Russian. She walks off, heaves a sigh, blows a kiss to the camera and says something. A medal for Russia in the all-around! But what color?
Aliya Mustadina, floor: Arbaian double front, very well done! 2.5 to front layout, the usual leg stuff, but well landed. Double tuck to end. Much better than in team finals, but is it enough? 13.9 puts her ahead of Afanasyeva! So even with a fall on beam, Mustafina overcomes for the win!
GOLD: Aliya Mustafina, RUS
SILVER: Ksenia Afanasyeva, RUS
