Criticism for President Obama’s welcome of PSY to Washington DC for the traditional Christmas special, “Christmas in Washington” has sparked outrage on Facebook. A photo of PSY dancing across his “kill” lyrics from 2004 was posted on Monday and just two days later, on December 12, the photo has generated over 179K likes with almost 20K comments about Obama’s acceptance of the Korean “Gangnam Style” Rapper.
Wednesday news is reporting the extreme popularity of PSY and the alternate call to boycott TNT for allowing PSY to perform for the Christmas special has lost some media attention. Others on Twitter are calling for the boycott of PSY, asking people to boycott PSY just like fans boycotted the Dixie Chicks years ago.
Some of the comments generated are just trivial opinion about the looks and others are more serious wanting PSY to recognize the freedom he has. Some of the comments make it clear that the people are reading just the post and not PSY’s past anti-American lyrics and current apologetic words. Some comments focus on PSY and some on President Obama who is criticized for being a communist, a traitor and hating Americans.
Part of the criticism is that President Obama not only welcomed PSY, who had already apologized for the 2004 lyrics, but Obama did not squash the participation in the Christmas special. Welcoming PSY to the White House without mentioning PSY or clarifying the reasons for including PSY in the celebrations hit a wrong nerve with many people.
To date the White House has simply said that they are not in charge of the celebrity lineup and deny knowing about PSY’s lyrics. TNT is criticized for refusing to pull the plug on the broadcast including PSY and will not do so unless a monetary incentive is given to do so – namely advertisers withdrawing their support dollars.
All of this anger has stemmed from PSY’s lyrics of 2004 when he performed with two other rappers. PSY last year took America by storm with his dance step of “Gangnam Style,” the dance step performed with many celebrities over the past year. The style is so popular that PSY has become the number one most searched celebrity on Google, and the dance step “Gangnam Style” took second place on Googles search engines according to Wednesday report by USA Today.
