Forecast discussion: It will be windy in Providence tonight, as we are currently under a tight pressure gradient. We are still feeling the air pressure from the low that dumped between 4 to 8 inches in the Providence area Saturday. Northern Rhode Island was the big winner, as towns like Pawtucket and Foster received between 8 to 12 inches. Also, a high pressure ridge from the west is trying to build over the region. We will see strong winds for the rest of the overnight, making wind chills out there feel like the single digits.
As we progress through the week, the jet stream will be setting up for colder air from the north to move down into the northern U.S. Tomorrow we will see temperatures above freezing, thanks to some sunshine. But, as we move through the week, temperatures are only going to get colder.
For New Year’s night, we will see cloudy skies with the chance of some passing snow showers or flurries. This is due to a weak Alberta Clipper, which will be passing through New England as we move into 2013. But, if you happen to be attending First Night activities, it will actually be mild for that midnight kiss.
By Tuesday evening, the overnight temperatures will fall into the teens. By Wednesday night, the polar jet will be over our region, forcing our temperatures down into the single digits Wednesday night. This cold air will remain over us into Thursday evening.
As we move closer to the weekend, the polar jet will begin to move back to the north. This will allow warmer air from the south to filter back into Southern New England. Another Alberta Clipper may pass through Rhode Island next Sunday, but will only give us some passing snow showers. Temperatures will rebound, as highs will come close to freezing during the daytime hours.
