With the year coming to a close, this is the time to reflect on the previous 12 months. A lot has happened in the world of pro wrestling. TNA saw the rises, and fall, of the Aces and Eights storyline, and also went aired TNA Impact live for several months. The WWE fans cheered and then jeered as CM Punk retained his WWE Championship for over a year, and groaned when Daniel Bryan lost to Sheamus in 18 seconds at Wrestlemania. It was a very lively year. Here are the top wrestling news stories of 2012.
Jerry Lawler Suffers Heart Attack
Perhaps one of the most memorable moments in the history of wrestling happened in early September on an episode of WWE Raw. While covering his usual duties at the commentary table, veteran wrestler Jerry “The King” Lawler collapsed to the ground and stopped breathing. While the match in the ring continued, Lawler was attended to at ringside and immediately brought backstage where CPR was administered. Lawler suffered a massive heart attack, but due to the prompt expertise of the ringside physician and staff, “King” survived the emergency. He eventually returned to the commentary table.
Hulk Hogan Sex Scandal
The aura of the 80’s icon continued to diminish in 2012, as Hulk Hogan was involved in a celebrity sex scandal. A one minute preview video of a Hulk Hogan sex tape was released on the internet and seen by millions of people worldwide. In the video, Hogan is seen naked and engaging in sexual activity with a blonde woman. The woman was later identified as the ex-wife of Bubba the Love Sponge. Hogan filed lawsuit against Bubba and the website Gawker.
The Rock versus John Cena
Despite the criticism launched by the internet wrestling community, the main event for Wrestlemania 28 saw the return of The Rock. In his Wrestlemania return, the Hollywood action star competed against current WWE golden boy John Cena. The match got mixed review, but nobody can argue the publicity and excitement drummed up. Wrestlemania 28 was a record breaking event largely in part because of this main event.
Brock Lesnar Returns
One night removed from Wrestlemania 28, the WWE set out to keep the momentum moving. With The Rock going on his Hollywood sabbatical, the WWE needed a big star to fill his shoes. And Brock Lesnar was that man. The former UFC Heavyweight Champion immediately attacked John Cena, which set up for a match at the next pay per view. Though he lost his first bout back, Lesnar’s presence brought back a little bit of the Attitude Era.
Linda McMahon Loses Senate Bid
Former WWE CEO Linda McMahon proved that wrestling promoters shouldn’t run for political office. After an unsuccessful run in 2010, Linda McMahon returned again in 2012. Vying for the Connecticut senate seat, McMahon wasted close to 100 million dollars trying to secure her spot in office. When McMahon finally conceded on election night, Vince could be seen visibly upset during the rally.
With The Rock scheduled to return at the Royal Rumble early next year, and Wrestlemania 29 just around the corner, wrestling fans can expect 2013 to be another wild and exciting years. Pro wrestling doesn’t have seasons like baseball and football. In wrestling, everyday is a potential big news story day.
