“Winning the lottery is like throwing Miracle Growth on your character defects. Everything is magnified.” is an insightful comment said in the documentary Lucky by a good friend of a lottery winner! (more on this later)
It is totally crazy that the Powerball jackpot has soared to a record high of $550 millions! Holy Macro, thats more than half a billion with a “b”! No wonder Powerball fever is sweeping the good old U.S. of A! I wish I in Calgary can buy a few tickets too!
ABC News listed a great Do’s and Don’ts of Office Lottery Pools. And I’ve pulled out a few notable ones here.
Write a Contract – “a simple piece of paper with the terms of your pool and everyone’s signature suffices“; “Make Sure Everyone Contributes an Equal Amount“; and “Make a List of People Who Opted Out This Time”
Rely on a Verbal Contract – “Words won’t hold up in a court of law if someone …” [note: You don’t really want to be dragged into a multi-year court dispute that ends up costing you a lot of lawyers’ fees.] ; Let Anyone Contribute Money on Behalf of Someone Else
Whether you are going to win the millions or not, you can rent Lucky (directed by Jeffery Blitz (Spellbound)) to watch. “Lucky offers a glimpse into the reality behind the fantasy of lottery winners. They come from an amazing range of backgrounds, but all of their lives are radically transformed by the same thing – an enormous lottery jackpot. With prize money reaching into the hundreds of millions, some lives are changed for the better, some for the worse. And together, their stories show us what happens when the fantasy turns real. Do we become what we dreamed we would or what, deep down, we really are?“
So back to the lottery winner I talked about in the beginning. This post retold the back story (emphasis added),
“One individual made spectacularly bad decisions with his 5.5 million dollar winnings! Within two years he had to start selling all that he had bought in order to have some money. After just a few years he was flat broke and living in a small storage room at the back of a friend’s plumbing company store! One friend commented on the man’s behavior by saying, “Winning the lottery is like throwing Miracle Grow on your character defects. Everything is magnified!”“
Good luck to everyone who play the Powerball tonight in winning the jackpot (or more likely, sharing the jackpot with other winners) and, more importantly, handling your massive winnings!
P.S. And don’t forget you can always tip this reporter from your winnings! Just send half of your tip to me and half to a charitable cancer society of your choice! OK OK, or you can send all my tip to a charitable cancer society in my name! :)
