After being postponed due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, the Power Pop-A-Licious 2 music festival will now take place on Friday, February 1 & Saturday, February 2nd at Cake Shop in New York City.
Conceived and curated by power pop legend Paul Collins (co-founder of The Nerves, The Breakaways and The Beat), the fest will bring together some of the finest young guitar-driven power pop, garage rock and punk-pop bands from the eastern seaboard and Canada. Of the lineup, Collins says, “Power Pop-A-Licious 2 is a unifying rally cry for the thriving rock-n-roll subculture, and is a means for power pop fans of all ages to discover a wealth of talented new acts in one power-packed weekend.”
Collins explains the concept behind this year’s festival:
“I wanted to keep the spirit of last year’s fest going. It was going to be a challenge to come up with a whole new bunch of bands that I personally believed in and that I thought meant something… In the end we were able to do that. All these bands are serious about what they are doing; they are all out there trying to make something happen, I am proud to be able to help them achieve that goal.”
Power-pop-A-Licious 2 is ground zero for a burgeoning DIY power pop scene fueled by the devotion of its fans, the immediacy of the internet and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Each day will feature bands from the East Coast that are left right and center of the new generation of the guitar driven melodic rock scene.
In a recent interview on Revenge of the 80s Radio, Collins explained how power pop has gained a lot of fan momentum in recent years: “It’s gaining acceptance and it’s flourishing all over the world in ways it had never been before… It’s really starting to gain momentum and take its rightful place as a serious genre in rock.”
Collins credits the fans as well in keeping the genre strong:
“Power pop fans are some of the best fans out there, they know that this music is a labor of love and they go way out of their way to help the bands who play this kind of music, when we are on the road, they feed us, take us into their homes and give us a warm place to sleep and they really make an effort to get to the shows and support the bands they love, it is more like family what I experience with our fans, they never cease to surprise me with their love and generosity.”
Tickets for Power Pop-A-Licious 2 are $10 and will be available in advance from Brown Paper Tickets.
