The trade winds died. The normally gentle waves at Airport Beach (also called Kahikili) 100 yards away flattened into nothing. The whitecaps disappeared across the channel. The clouds piled up in the West Maui Mountains. Haze descended, obscuring the usual crystal-clear view of Molokai and Lanai floating so near. It was the Kona Wind that caused all this, a low-pressure system churning to the north of the islands effectively turning the usual wind pattern around. Locals hate the condition, which brings still, stagnant air and humidity usually blown away by the trades.
Here at Outrigger Maui Eldorado Kaanapali, we don’t really care. The beach, a short stroll along a golf fairway away, is still one of the finest in Hawaii, the Eldorado’s private cabana awaiting. This low-rise condo, a collection of one- and two-floor buildings spread over 10 acres, is adjacent to but separate from Kaanapali’s busy main beach and collection of resort hotels and condo towers. We are just inland from the landmark headland Black Rock, which makes our wonderfully sandy, ideal swimming beach so private. We have easy walking access to many fine and fun restaurants—Hula Grill, Leilani’s, Castaway—but it is quiet and peaceful in where we sit on a wide lanai. The loudest usual noises are the myna birds when they awake at dawn and the metallic thwack of big-head drivers on golf balls.
Our one-bedroom, one-bath unit, J-205, is on the second floor of the building closest to the beach, the view from the exceptionally large lanai is across a fairway. The apartments here are among the most spacious we have found, the kitchens are full-sized. There is wi-fi, a pair of televisions, a guest book full of rapturous comments.
Okay, there are no elevators and walks can be long with intervening stairs to climb, and gaps in Hawaii’s anti-smoking laws allows nicotine addicts to puff away 20 feet from our lanai.
