Now that the election, Thanksgiving and family feuding is over, Americans look forward to the next holiday tradition – and debates. Many people over this holiday season were easily baited into less-than relaxing political debates since President Barack Obama has another four years in the White House.
When you come from central Pennsylvania like I do, needless to say there are a lot of conservative Republicans. Don’t get me wrong. I am conservative in some ways. I want a family, a monogamous marriage and children. A house minus the white picket fence sounds good as well as a dog to add to my family. So when the subject of why do Republicans hate Planned Parenthood so much, I received some disturbing answers from an uninformed family member, which has prompted me to clarify the facts from the fiction.
Planned Parenthood are health centers around the country that offer health care with a wide range of services. And these services vary by location. They may include:
• Abortion • Birth Control • Emergency Contraception (Morning After Pill) • General Health Care • HIV Testing • LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender) Services • Men’s Health Care • Pregnancy Testing & Services • STD Testing, Treatment & Vaccines • Women’s Health Care
Not all clinics offer abortions. Many offer referrals to abortion clinics in other (usually larger) metropolitan areas. So before you go protesting abortion outside of a family planning clinic, make sure you know if they actually perform abortions inside. That just seems like common sense to me.
Another misconception is that health insurance pays for abortions. Even when you look at the website, it clearly states abortion “costs about $300–$950 in the first trimester.” Personally I don’t agree with second or third trimester abortions but to each their own. If you look at the total costs of raising a child, this is a drop in the bucket for some downtrodden people. Or worse yet, drug addicts, alcoholics or the homeless. And please don’t tell me anyone can get a job at McDonald’s. No human being can live by themselves on minimum wage let alone raising a child and babysitting fees. Please!
Planned Parenthood has received federal funding since 1970, when President Richard Nixon signed it into law. Nixon described Title X funding as “no American woman should be denied access to family planning assistance because of her economic condition.”
Another argument is why should we (the people) have to pay for women’s health care? The answer is simple. We have more responsibility to deal with than a man. Men have two functions for their penis. Women have a multitude of functions with their fertility, uterus, childbearing, periods and breasts. With these complex body parts there is also a greater chance of cancer, STDs, cysts, fibrosis and infections. Even if women “just kept their legs shut” because “men only think with their penis,” there is still a world of complications a woman may face by just being born a female. There is also the biggest STD in the world now, HPV, which can cause cervical cancer in women. Men are carriers but cannot be tested. Only women can be tested through a Pap smear.
Perhaps when Obamacare comes through, we won’t have to argue so much on these issues when there is universal health care no matter what political party you follow. There is a reason that most women voted for Obama this election. And as our voice continues to grow, so will our political influence.
