Top news coming in to a chilly San Francisco today is about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Now one teacher is saying she heard noises and mistakenly thought they were coming from a janitor doing work. Shari Thornberg, a Sandy Hook Elementary staffer was passing around photos of her young son to her colleagues when she heard what she calls a “weird noise.” She thought that the noise was likely coming from a janitor removing risers in the gym and setting up tables.
“I can’t begin to imagine what the parents of those babies must be feeling. I’m still in shock over it all,” says San Francisco resident, Alicia Keats.
But, says USA Today, Thornberg then heard the intercom come on and understood that the noise she was hearing was gunfire. With that, Thornberg hid in a closet with two other colleagues and a fourth-grader she worked with.
Thornberg and her colleagues could still hear “screaming, crying, and whimpering” on the intercom. They could also hear the janitor tell Adam Lanza to put down his gun.
Lanza went on to kill 26 people that day, including 20 children, funerals for whom have already started (See that article here: Photos: Newtown shooting victims, first funerals to be held)
Terrified, Thornberg and the other staff members just kept saying The Lord’s Prayer repeatedly. “We just waited in the closet, saying The Lord’s Prayer out loud over and over again, and praying for all staff members and the children,” Thornberg says
Thornberg believes she may have passed Lanza in the car park as she did not arrive until around 9.30am, the time Lanza entered the building.
Thornberg tells USA Today that Dawn Hochsprung, the principal, may have stopped Lanza from targeting around 16 first-graders who were hiding. Instead, Lanza entered two other classrooms where he carried out his deadly rampage.
