Kate Middleton rarely makes a fashion mis-step. In fact, her style picks in 2012 proved she knows how to dress for perfection 99% of the time. But between the stunning gowns, the tailored coats, and her favorite pair of navy cork wedges, there were a few fashion faux pas this year.
Royal family screw ups of 2012: Kate Middleton, Pippa, Harry keep Queen blushing (Video)
Kate Middleton didn’t do herself many favors wearing a black tweed dress to a preview of Lucian Freud paintings at the National Portrait Gallery in February. The dress, with the huge shawl collar, came off too matronly for this young, stylish royal. It seemed to consume the upper part of her body and hide some of her best assets: her neck, shoulders and face.
The Duchess of Cambridge also didn’t win any style points when she opted for a gray floral dress for the Trooping of Color in June. Ironically, the dress’ color was flat — perhaps intentionally to show off Prince William’s military attire. Next time we suggest she go bold, so the Duchess doesn’t risk looking like she snagged her dress out of the Queen — or Camilla’s — closet rather than one stocked full of wardrobe choices for a 30-year-old princess.

Another of Kate’s few-and-far between fashion misses of 2012 included a gray dress with a too-long and too narrow bow around the waist. The black floral detail on the chest aged the dress far beyond Kate’s youthful years. The Duchess wore the dress as she joined the Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Charles on a royal visit to the Dulwich Picture Gallery in March.
While this may be a controversial choice to include on a list of Kate Middleton fashion faux pas – the white two piece skirt and stop set the Duchess wore to Wimbledon in June just didn’t work. The tiered skirt and the overly detailed shoulder straps were just a little too over the top for the usually classy Duchess.
During the Diamond Jubilee Tour of the Far East Kate Middleton wore a dress she had a hand in making. While the yellow sundress worked, the clunky wedge sandals she paired it with didn’t. They seemed to take the ease out of her usually graceful walk and distracted from the beauty of her design.
Admittedly, in 2012 Kate Middleton had far more fashion hits, than she did misses. We suggest the Duchess stick with a pop of color and class — oh, and she ought to keep wearing her best accessory – her smile.
