Ryan Garfield, 16, of Petaluma, took top honors in the Boys 15 – 19 Division in the 2012 IJGT NorCal Open at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Gilroy this weekend.
Unseasonably warm weather greeted the golfers on both days of the tournament as the South Valley drowsed under sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s. Garfield got out to a good start in Saturday’s round, posting a 6-over 78 on the 6,600-yard, par-72 course. Eventual second-place finisher Christian Galvin, 16, of Saratoga was only two strokes back of Garfield after the first round, with Mason Troike, 15, of Orangevale a further five strokes back at 85.
Garfield, Galvin, and Troike all had a tougher time of it on Sunday – all three posted second-day scores ranging from 90 to 93. Galvin’s 78 – 90 – 168 was good enough for the win – his first in IJGT competition. Galvin followed up his first-round 80 with a 93 on Sunday, finishing with a tournament total of 173, two strokes ahead of T-3 finishers Mason Troike and Aaron Ong, 15, of Hayward, who posted identical two-round totals of 175.
The Boys 14 & under Division saw another first-time winner taking home the trophy. Playing the course at 6,075 yards, Grant Leppek, 14, of Rocklin shot back-to-back rounds in the 80s, finishing 82 – 84 – 166 to finish 23 strokes ahead of the only other competitior in his bracket, Moibhi Tyndall, of Mountain View.
The only girl in the tournament, 13-year-old Amelia McKee of Paso Robles, playing at 5,904 yards, shot 92 – 83 – 175 for the tournament. Amelia ended Sunday’s round with a flourish, parring home over the last three holes.
