Not all workouts are alike. SuperSlow strength training is a type of workout that breaks the traditional rep, set, and intensity of a workout. The SuperSlow method was created and developed in 1982 during a $3.2 million osteoporosis study at the University of Florida School of Medicine. The goal is to help people see optimal health results in the least amount of time. So exactly what is the SuperSlow workout? Traditional strength training workouts consist of completing an exercise through sets and reps. “Reps” is a term short for “repetitions” or how many times you complete the activity. Sets are literally sets of how many times you repeat the series of repetitions. For instance, you might complete 3 sets of 10-15 reps of an exercise, resting 30 seconds in between each set. In a SuperSlow workout you will complete only one set of the exercise. However, you complete the set with a set pace of 10 seconds for the concentric contraction (to shorten the muscle, or the “up” motion) and 10 seconds for the eccentric contraction (to lengthen the muscle, or the “down” motion) for up to 2 minutes or until you reach complete muscle fatigue. In short, you workout 4-6 muscle groups for a total of 2 minutes at a time while carefully completing each repetition to a timed 10 second “up” and 10 second “down” pace.
At the SuperSlow Zone in Windermere, members are treated to one on one, private workouts located in the 1,800 square foot facility led by certified trainer, Andrew Noble. He describes his passion for the SuperSlow training system that he provides his clients as he drives them to see great results.
Q: What is SuperSlow Zone and what makes it unique to the Orlando market?
Andrew: SuperSlow Zone offers a total body workout, performed 20 minutes twice a week. It’s climate controlled at 68 degrees. There is no sweating, there is need for the client to change clothes, and it’s a great time saver.
Q: What does a SuperSlow workout consist of and why does it work?
Andrew: A SuperSlow workout consists of a 4-6 Nautilus machines done much slower your typical strength training. Instead of heaving weights around, which can cause injury to joints, we work a maximum amount of muscle fibers through a complete range of motion. SuperSlow is the ultimate workout protocol and is 100% results focused. By removing momentum from the exercise, the safety of the workout increases. This also allows a higher degree of intensity, which further increases the results such as weight loss, increased strength, a higher resting metabolism, more energy and decreased belly fat.
Q: How can an individual achieve results without doing any cardiovascular activity?
Andrew: SuperSlow builds muscle, muscle burns fat. The more muscle we have, the more fat we burn. Traditional cardiovascular exercises (treadmill, bike, ellipitcal) stops burning calories the minute you step off of the machine. Whereas, the muscle you build from a SuperSlow workout stays with you and burns fat 24/7.
Q: How long does an individual need to commit to achieve the desired results for the average person?
Andrew: Our bodies go through a physiological change at approximately 12 weeks. In that same 12 weeks, we also will establish a concrete habit. In my professional opinion, if you do something for 12 weeks, you will stick with it for the long haul. As we all know, health is a marathon, not a sprint.
Q: The SuperSlow Zone is also in connection with Dr. Jeffrey N.Shebovsky who offers extensive services as a chiropractor. The facility also offers massage. Is there a connection to Super Slow and these other services and if so in what way?
Andrew: Absolutely! Many patients will seek treatment with Dr. Robert Ostheim (Dr. Jeff is the clinic director) and once they reach the wellness phase of their treatment they will come work with us. The same goes for massage.
Q: If someone is injured can they participate in SuperSlow training and if so, what makes it different from other forms of training?
Andrew: Without a doubt someone who is injured can participate. Since ALL momentum is removed from the workouts there is minimal risk of injury. We have trained a vast variety of our members, from a 15 year old athlete to a 70 year old female with a hip and knee replacements. The workout is very adaptable and will offer results regardless of limitations. Certain injuries do require a doctor’s clearance.
Q: What turned you on to SuperSlow Training and how long have you been a certified trainer.
Andrew: What I love about SuperSlow is the time savings. Having a young daughter and a busy life, it was immediately attractive. Having previous experience as a trainer from a “box gym”, initially I was skeptical. 20 minutes, twice a week?! But after my first workout I was hooked! There is nothing else like it. I have been a certified Super Slow instructor for over a year. Previous to Super Slow I was a certified personal trainer with Lifestyle Family Fitness. During my 4 years there, I was able to work with some great trainers. I even became certified in corrective exercise and started helping people post physical therapy.
