It is the 2012 fashion trend that has a love/hate relationship with fashionistas. Some hope it will live on into 2013, and others wish it would just die now.
Somewhere right now, the Kardashian sisters are squeezing into yet another Peplum dress. No one rocked the peplum look this year as much as the Kardashian sisters, especially Kim. From leather skirts and tops to bold dresses and everything in between, Kim Kardashian was all about the waist ruffles.
Why the obsession?
Peplum is the perfect waist cincher. Anyone who wants the illusion of a tiny waist need only rock a peplum dress or skirt. It adds femininity with its ruffles and a sleek sophistication at the waist. It is one of the few styles that look good on anyone. Skinny, boyish, curvy, it doesn’t discriminate.
It is noticeably easier to wear than most other styles. There is something inherently sexy about a peplum dress, skirt or jacket. It transforms a basic casual look into something dressy or stylish in an instant.
Take a pair of skinny jeans, add a black tank, a structured red peplum jacket, gold hoop earrings, a chic black clutch and black peeptoe heels or even flats, and you have a sophisticated fashionista.
Not only was peplum one of the dominant fashion trends in 2012, but it showed up on 2013 runways, signaling a continuing trend in the new year. The only difference between 2012 peplum and 2013 peplum is that we will see a lot more emerald green.
While trends come and go, some of them are so flattering that one hopes they would last a bit longer. And my guess is that we have only scratched the peplum style surface. Expect it to hold on through the end of 2013.
Peplum dresses are the perfect party dress, the perfect casual chic dress, the perfect office dress, the perfect date dress and the perfect ‘night on the town’ dress.
We have chosen 20 of our favorite peplum outfits – dresses, tops, skirts, and even swimsuits, to serve as style inspiration for the one must-have fashion item every woman can rock in 2013.
