The holidays is a time for indulgence, and what better way to indulge yourself than to play a delightfully sinful new game. Party of Sin was released for PC yesterday by a group of independent developers. Daniel Menard, the project lead, developed the award-winning Half-Life 2 mod and Eternal Silence. Other artists from Eternal Silence joined the project as well. The development team has been working on this game voluntarily for the last 3 years, only getting a little financial compensation recently when pre-orders of the game started to sell. What makes this game special and why was it worth their time to work so long for free?
Party of Sin is a cooperative platformer/puzzler for 1-4 people. You play as one of the Seven Deadly Sins, Greed, Sloth, Envy, Lust, Pride, Wrath or Gluttony. The object of the game is to fight and puzzle your way out of Hell and into Heaven. The mechanics are reminiscent of old side scrolling platformers like Contra or Mario Bros, with an added puzzle-solving twist that can take everyone on your team to solve. Each Sin has his or her own special ability that reflects their role, ranging from Lust’s power to make enemies fall in love with her before she slaughters them, to Gluttony being a big fatty who just eats everyone, sometimes spitting them back up later to lend a hand.
This is a different type of game than you usually see, and it has a lot of great little comical moments that really add to the experience. It’s not just about killing all the baddies in your way, it’s about how you decide to do it that really makes it fun. One thing that is different about this game, and the developers behind it, is that they have chosen to not make this a MMO game, meaning that there will be no online play. You can play with 4 friends at home, but not with a bunch of strangers online. Their reasoning behind this decision is that griefing is a part of games, and can be fun when you are heckling your friends, but that people who play online, anonymously, often get stupid and mean, and they don’t want that attitude to be a part of their game. Pretty cool, if you ask me.
You can pick this sweet game up for only $15 as a digital download right now. There are talks with Microsoft to get this game released as a download for the Xbox Live arcade, but nothing definite yet. Mac and Linux versions will be out before too long as well, so don’t be discouraged if you are not a PC gamer, you’ll get your chance eventually. As they say over at Party of Sin headquarters, ‘The Seven Deadly Sins are believed to destroy the life of grace and lead to eternal damnation. In Party of Sin, we allow you to do so comfortably from your sofa.’ Thanks for that guys, and just in time for Christmas too.
