As India steps up its’ efforts to compete with other countries in the world of modern fashion and glamour, it seems to have pulled all the stops for India Resort Fashion Week 2012. The four-day event, which runs Wednesday November 28th-December 1st 2012, isn’t just a fashion show; it’s an international 4-day party set on exclusive Candolim Beach in North Goa, India, approximately 150 miles south of Mumbai.
The event is actually a 3-part fashion and entertainment blowout, featuring the Fashion Show, the Fashion Village and the Music Festival. Parties are scheduled throughout the event, with pre- and post-show parties each evening.
As a cherry on top of this fashion sundae, the show features a “one of its kind ramp set on the beach with the backdrop displaying the majestic sea” (Ayojak). It is expected to be breathtaking.
The SandKastle Dance Music Festival http://www.irfw.in/fashion-festival-artist.php is touted as “perhaps the greatest assembly of world’s most famous DJ’s and Live music artists in the Indian Sub-continent.” It appears to be more of a dance party than what Americans would consider a “festival.” Paris Hilton, not normally associated with chart-topping hits, is scheduled as the last DJ on Friday night.
The Fashion Village is where all things fashion can be purchased, supposedly while you’re waiting for your Blue Sapphire Martini to arrive. According to the official India Resort Fashion Week website, the Fashion Village adds “a new dimension to traditional Indian Flee [sic] market.” Based on the official map of the Fashion Village layout, the main venue houses numerous vendors, two cafés, and four bars. Can’t forget to party!
The Fashion Shows run from 3-10 p.m. each night, with 20-minute runway shows separated by 40 minutes of partying, mingling, and shopping each hour.
The fashion celebrity appearances will include Nicole Huber, Miss Paraguay 2011 and Miss World 2012, who is recognized as one of the most beautiful women in the Southern Hemisphere. Holding at least 5 pageant titles, her meteoric rise to stardom has taken South America by storm. As a spokes-model for the event, fans will likely see her mingling with designers and other models, and dazzling unsuspecting guests.
Also appearing is a local favorite, Bipasha Basu. The “Bengali Bombshell” is an Indian actress originally from Calcutta who won the Ford Models Supermodel of the World competition at the age of 17 – and is arguably one of the most beautiful women in South Asia. She will grace the runway Friday night, wearing a design by Anjalee and Arjun Kapoor.
Rounding off the top 3 fashion guest stars is Leryn Franco, who competed in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and narrowly missed qualifying for the 2012 London Olympic Games (Gratereaux, 2012). As a Javelin thrower, she’s got talent, but she’s not the best. Although she didn’t win medals in the Olympics, she catapulted her career into the stratosphere as the world watched the beauty queen compete. She was so popular, in fact, that she was featured in the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and selected for Nike’s 2012 Look of Sport campaign — without winning anything!
Indian designers scheduled to show include: James Ferreira, Falguni and Shane Peacock, Rocky S, Narendra Kumar Ahmed, and Pria Kataria Puri.
As India wraps up its 2012 fashion season, it seems to be catching on to the fashion movement around the globe. Incorporating bikini models is just one example; these are simply not traditional Indian dress. Americans have been half-naked for the past 75 years, and now India is slowly slipping out of its’ stiflingly conservative fashion past and revealing a glimpse of the seductive lace that lies beneath.
