After the Thanksgiving turkey digested it was time to get out and celebrate the beginning of the holiday season. The Stone Church in Newmarket was a revival spot for those seeking inspiration on black Friday. While there were a few weary patrons from hitting the stores so early, the fans of Nemes and Dressed for the Occasion also showed how faithful they are.
Nemes, with a notable absence of bass player Alex Glover, kicked off the night in style with fan favorite “Blues.” As the band worked their way through the set, they got spirits rising and some of that weariness was thrown aside to make for the start of fantastic evening of music. While the spirited Nemes was full of energy, as they always seem to be, they dropped it down a notch and went with some raw blues acoustically.
There was a certain richness to the tonal quality in Nemes’ playing as they played their tunes acoustically. When they broke out with “Blue Rose” it was magical. When Josh Knowles drew the bow across the strings it was a reminder of the television show “Name that Tune” and any follower of the band could name that tune in 2 notes. When Chris Anthony came in with the Cajun and Dave Anthony with the acoustic guitar it gave that part of the set a deep seated emotion that grew as the band played in the hallowed church grounds. Nemes kicked it back into full gear before ending out their set.
After a short break, Dressed for the Occasion followed and started their set with “Fly by Night;” they had the crowd moving and grinding at that point and it didn’t stop.
If you get your hands on the CD that’s available only at their shows (for free!), “Fly by Night” is the first track that’s heard – and what you hear immediately when you hit their web page. Speaking with Addison Chase before the show he mentioned that the band is hoping to put together some tracks so they can get a CD mastered and available in the near future.
After DFTO rocked out for most of what was left in the night, Nemes came back on stage and there was a serious jam session that even the patrons getting into the act on stage! There had been a rumor that Frank Viele was going to make a guest appearance, but he was a little under the weather and wasn’t able to make it.
Overall this was a fantastic way to end day and kick off the holiday season! If you didn’t have a chance to make it to The Stone Church on Friday night, you missed a great show! Nemes and DFTO will be teaming up in Manchester on December 8th at Milly’s Tavern, however. It should be another epic evening that you should mark your calendar for now. On a weekend everyone was giving thanks for something, Nemes and DFTO were two reasons to be thankful for local musicians giving it their all every time they are performing.
Nemes will be at the Irish Village in Brighton, MA on December 1st and on the 7th they will be at Two Sisters in Plaistow, NH.
