Andy Davies, a former bodyguard for One Direction, has given an interview to the Daily Mirror about what it was like to work for this mega-popular boy band that has become the biggest act to emerge from “The X Factor.”
Davies didn’t really say much in the interview that die-hard One Direction fans don’t already know.
For example, it was already widely reported that on March 31, 2012, Michelle Obama and her daughters, Sasha and Malia, met One Direction at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Mrs. Obama invited One Direction to perform at the annual White House Easter Egg Roll, but One Direction had to decline because of work commitments in Australia. However, One Direction has an open invitation to visit President Barack Obama and his family at the White House when it can be worked into everyone’s schedules.
Here is how Davies described the Obamas’ encounter with One Direction: “The boys had a really nice chat with Michelle and her daughters backstage at one of the gigs last March. They got on so well they ended up chatting for about an hour and swapped numbers. Michelle took a call from the President while they were talking. It was surreal because the boys could hear his voice on the other end. The President even asked Michelle to say ‘Hi’ for him, so they all excitedly shouted back, ‘hello.’ They then had an invite to the White House from the President but had to turn it down because of schedules. They were all devastated. Michelle said they could reschedule so it’s all good …
“[One Direction’s Niall Horan] kept asking Michelle questions about her husband, telling her how much he loved and respected him and that he had this statue. She found it really funny and said when they come over to bring a picture of it for him to see. In return she’s promised he’ll play a bit of American football with them. I remember Harry [Styles of One Direction] saying that Michelle reminded him of his mum because she seemed very kind and caring.”
And speaking of Styles’ mother, Davies said that Styles is “always worried” about her.
His descriptions of the group members’ personalities are nothing new, except he surprisingly described Styles as a “a little bit of a loner,” which is a description that One Direction’s Zayn Malik usually gets.
Here is how Davies described One Direction’s personalities:
Harry Styles, 18: “He wants to talk but doesn’t want to make conversation. You have to do all the talking. He just wants a bit of company. He’s always worried about his mum. Last year I had an arm wrestle with Harry and he saw the star tattoo on my bicep. A couple of weeks later he had exactly the same one. I think he was a little embarrassed when I teased him about it …
“They’re all quite tight but Harry’s a little bit of a loner. He has a hell of a way about him. He’s a very charming individual. Everyone who meets him notices that. All the guys are lovely individually but Harry does have a certain something about him that separates him. No-one ever has a bad word to say about him. He gets a lot of attention from girls. Harry is a charmer… a smooth operator.”
Zayn Malik, 19: “He likes to get home at night, just chill and do things with his friends. He loves art. He’ll often buy canvases to do his own art. But he said he’d like to try acting at some point.”
Louis Tomlinson, 20: “He would instigate all the naughty things and is a cheeky chappy. He is very different when his girlfriend was around though… he’d become very mature.”
Niall Horan, 19: “He just loves to play on his guitar and watch sport. He’ll often ask me to go and watch a football match with him, or go to a concert. He also loves his Skype…he’s always Skyping his friends. He likes a few pints and he’s a big eater.”
Liam Payne, 19: “He’s the most sensible. He’s the most businesslike and the most professional. He would love to produce and write music. He’s already into the music writing.”
It’s no surprise that One Direction fans can go to extreme measures to meet the group. Davies said that the parents are often worse than their children. He described an unusual offer that One Direction turned down: “We were in a lift [British term for elevator] in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and this lady offered the boys $1 million to meet her kids. Sometimes the parents can be worse than the actual fans. This lady didn’t understand why we couldn’t take her offer. Some of these very wealthy people will do anything for their daughters. Three years ago you wouldn’t have paid a fiver to meet the band. It’s truly astonishing.”
There are many entertainers who would have gladly taken that $1 million offer, so One Direction declining the offer is an interesting tidbit of information for anyone who thinks that One Direction will always whore themselves out for a large amount on money.
The article did not explain why Davies is no longer working for One Direction, but he told the Daily Mirror: “I miss the boys a great deal. They keep in touch though. Niall, Louis and Zayn are really good at that… they text me. Harry’s Harry… if I bumped into him tomorrow he would run up, give me a hug and say, ‘I miss you, man.'”
And speaking of doing things for the money, the Mirror is a tabloid that often pays for interviews, so it’s very possible that Davies did this interview for the money. And since he said only flattering things and hardly anything new in the interview, he obviously wants to stay on good terms with One Direction. At least fans know now that One Direction doesn’t have employees sign confidentiality agreements that are in effect even when the staffers are no longer employed by the group.
