New York City is big enough for a population of more than 8 million people, but as of November 27, 2012, feuding boy bands One Direction and The Wanted have been staying just 13 streets apart at relatively new and trendy hotels while they’re in New York City for concerts and other promotional duties.
Fans and paparazzi have already staked out the hotels where One Direction and The Wanted are staying. Many of the people who’ve been waiting outside the hotel have been posting updates on the Internet.
During the recent Twitter war of words between The Wanted’s Max George and One Direction’s Zayn Malik, George said he wanted to settle the feud in person when the two groups are in New York at the same time, so people are waiting to see if One Direction and The Wanted will cross paths. Despite the close proximity of the hotels where they are staying, the two groups are not expected to be in the same venue until December 7, 2012, when One Direction ad The Wanted perform at the star-studded Z100 Jingle Ball at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
“X Factor” U.K. boy band One Direction has several friends who are performing at the Z100 Jingle Ball concert, including Ed Sheeran, Olly Murs, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift. (Swift and One Direction’s Harry Styles have been dating each other and she will attend One Direction’s Madison Square Garden concert on December 3, 2012.) Bieber and The Wanted are managed by Scooter Braun, but The Wanted’s feud with One Direction has not had a big negative impact on Bieber’s friendship with One Direction.
When One Direction previously visited New York City, the group stayed at the London Hotel and the more upscale Trump International Hotel on the west side of midtown Manhattan. For this particular visit, One Direction has opted for the trendy Ace Hotel further downtown in Manhattan’s Flatiron District. The smaller hotel, which opened in 2009, is notable for its very dark interiors and for catering to a younger celebrity clientele than the larger, more traditional hotels that are popular with celebrities, such as the Four Seasons, Trump International Hotel, Mandarin Oriental, Ritz-Carlton and Waldorf-Astoria. Chloe Sevigny and Kirsten Dunst are big fans of the Ace Hotel. Nas and U2 have had parties there. The Ace Hotel is surrounded by commercial businesses and is less conspicuous than the flashier Trump hotel. The atmosphere at the hotel is very reminiscent of a dark, retro-inspired European nightclub.
Just 13 streets away, The Wanted is staying at the Dream Downtown Hotel in Manhattan’s Chelsea/Meatpacking District, which is the location of some of the city’s hippest nightclubs that are frequented by many of the top models in New York City. The hotel, which opened in 2011, also caters to a younger celebrities. In contrast to the dark and mysterious atmosphere of Ace Hotel, the Dream Downtown is brightly lit and designed like a modern, space-age hub. Heidi Klum, Gabrielle Union and Conor Maynard have had parties at the hotel.
Sources say that hotels were chosen because they’re relatively new and are more tolerant of the shenanigans that can happen when a popular boy band stays at the hotel and attracts hysterical fans. One Direction and The Wanted are very good for these hotels’ business in the highly competitive world of Manhattan hotels that do a lot of business with celebrities.
Most of the members of The Wanted are over age 21, and therefore old enough to legally drink alcohol and go to bars in the United States, so it’s not surprising that they’re staying at a hotel that is right in the middle of the some of the hottest clubs that attract Manhattan’s young and beautiful. The members of One Direction are all under the age of 21, so they won’t be able to get into bars and most nightclubs while in the U.S., but they have other ways to keep themselves entertained.
When One Direction visited New York in mid-November 2012, One Direction’s Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson went paintballing, went shopping at toy stores for Nerf guns, and stopped by an Apple retail store to check out some gadgets. And apparently, they like to do finger painting in onesies. (Those are the things they can show on camera.)
As previously reported, the concerts that One Direction is headlining in the New York City area on November 30, December 1 and December 3 will be the first concerts in which they will perform many of the songs from the group’s recently released second album, “Take Me Home.”
As for the feud between The Wanted and One Direction, The Wanted talked about it in an interview with Detroit radio station Channel 955 at the station’s Jingle Ball on November 24, 2012.
When asked abut the Twitter feud between The Wanted’s and One Direction’s Malik, The Wanted’s George said, “I’m not sure what his problem is, to be honest. It started off that I thought we were just having a bit of banter, but he seemed to get a bit serious. I tried to palm it off as being friendly again, but you can only take so many insults and eventually I just said, ‘All right, listen: If you’ve got a problem, come and see me in New York when we’re there doing a gig together and we’ll sort it out.’ It won’t last long though.”
As for Malik calling George “chlamydia boy” in their Twitter argument, The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness commented, “I don’t think it’s based on any fact. It’s like when kids in the playground go, ‘Poo Breath!’ Rarely has that kid actually eaten feces. I think he was just taking a stab in the dark. We’ll exchange some hilarious STD-based jokes, I’m sure!”
George said of Malik: “I think he’s probably just finished sex ed.”
As for boys bands that the members of The Wanted do like and and are friendly with, they mentioned Backstreet Boys, Big Time Rush and McFly as groups they admire and respect.
December 1, 2012 update: The Wanted are in Los Angeles on December 3 for KIIS-FM’s Jingle Ball concert and will be back in New York City by December 7 for Z100’s Jingle Ball concert. Meanwhile, One Direction is staying at Trump International Hotel.
