On the corner in an unassuming neighborhood in Chicago, sits a mecca for many vegetarians and vegans – The Chicago Diner. The cozy restaurant is made to look like an old-fashioned diner, from the red tables and black chairs, to the wooden booths, to the small counter for single diners, and even down to the neon signs on the walls. The Chicago Diner offers an old-fashioned, fun, and comfortable atmosphere with delicious, veggie comfort food!
“The Chicago Diner offers vegan food with down-home appeal,” said Del Nakamura, the head of marketing. Comfort food is the name of the game from appetizers to desserts. Appetizers include “wings” and nachos, huge salads include chickun ranch and smoked tempeh Caesar, entrees include country-fried steak and quinoa chili, sandwiches include the Dagwood and Reuben, and there are burgers and sides like mashed potatoes & gravy and macaroni & cheese. And the real treat is that they are all vegan or have vegan options!
The Chicago Diner also offers up some great dessert selections. They have a wide variety of vegan shakes and lots of desserts from their bakery, including cakes, cupcakes, and cookies. The desserts have become so popular that they sell them in other places, included Whole Foods Markets across the country, even the stores right here in Michigan.
In addition to their regular menu, The Chicago Diner offers a brunch menu until 3 pm daily. Brunch fare includes items such as biscuits and gravy, steak & eggs, country Benedict, French toast, and vegan cinnamon rolls – all vegan or with vegan options, of course! They also have a kids’ menu and a wide variety of drinks, including cold drinks, hot drinks, zero calorie drinks, and alcoholic beverages. They also offer gluten-free options and can accommodate those with food allergies. Prices are comparable to what you’d find at restaurants in Michigan, and cheaper than many of the other restaurants you find in Chicago.
“The food at The Chicago Diner is just amazing!” said Yena Peach Sanchez, vegan tourist in Chicago. “The portions are huge – perfect for sharing. I’m glad I can at least get their desserts back at home – if only they’d start selling their entrees at Whole Foods.”
The Chicago Diner has become so popular that they recently opened a second location in Chicago! So if you’re in Chicago and looking for some down-home vegan fare, give The Chicago Diner a try – you won’t regret it!
