Seattle offensive lineman Russell Okung was named an NFL Pro Bowl starter on Wednesday, Dec. 26 2012.
He was one of two Seattle linemen to make the team, and it is the second consecutive season that a former Cowboy has made the Pro Bowl. Last year defensive end Antonio Smith of the Houston Texans made the roster.
Okung is the 51st pro bowl selection for Oklahoma State spread out among 16 players.
Okung was the overall No. 6 pick in the draft, and No. 1 for Seattle, in 2010. Okung starts at left tackle. Center Max Unger also was named a starter for the Pro Bowl.
The Seahawks offense has been on fire of late, racking up 150 points in its last three games for the third-most points in a three-game span in NFL history and the most since 1950. The Seahawks have won six of their last seven games and have clinched a playoff berth. They rank second in the NFL in rushing offense.
Okung has been instrumental in opening lanes for the NFL’s second-leading rusher, Marshawn Lynch, and he most recently pitched a shutout against the NFL’s sack leader, San Francisco’s Aldon Smith, in last week’s prime-time contest.
During his time at Oklahoma State, Okung started 52 games, including the final 47 contests of his career. A 2009 Outland Trophy finalist, Okung helped pave the way for a Cowboy offense that led the Big 12 in rushing during each of his four seasons as a starter. He registered 317 knock-downs with 48 touchdown-resulting blocks during his time as a starter. During his final two collegiate seasons, Okung’s 30 touchdown-resulting blocks were tops in the Big 12, according to the Oklahoma State sports information office.
The 2013 Pro Bowl will be played on Jan. 27 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu. Votes by fans, coaches and players are used in determining who plays in the Pro Bowl. The consensus vote of each group counts one-third toward the total. Each team submits two ballots – those of the coach and the players with no one allowed to vote for a player on his own team.
