During an interview with David Gregory on Sunday’s “Meet the Press,” Barack Obama falsely claimed that he has never compared himself to Abraham Lincoln, America’s first Republican president.
“I never compare myself to Lincoln,” he said when Gregory asked if the current crisis is his “Lincoln moment.”
But Dave Boyer of the Washington Times said that just isn’t the case.
“Actually, Mr. Obama has evoked deliberately comparisons with Lincoln ever since he announced his candidacy for president on Feb. 10, 2007, at the Old State Capitol building in Springfield, Ill,” Boyer wrote. “He chose the site because it was the same place where Lincoln gave a famous speech condemning slavery and called for the Northern and Southern states to unite.”
In August 2011, Obama compared himself to Lincoln at a campaign-style town hall meeting in Decorah, Iowa.
“When you listen to what the Federalists said about the Anti-Federalists, and the names that Jefferson called Hamilton and back and forth — I mean those guys were tough,” he said. “Lincoln — they used to talk about him almost as bad as they talk about me. So democracy has never been for the faint of heart.”
Obama reiterated his “messy democracy” line Sunday while speaking with Gregory.
“The point though is democracy has always been messy,” he said.
Obama also used the interview to blame Republicans for his own obstinacy on the fiscal cliff and announce that despite all evidence to the contrary, he is not an ideological president. He also promised action on gun control during the first year of his second term.
