This is the number one season for tasting and buying wine!
We have a nearly full slate of open wine shops, tasting Friday, so get out and taste the wine! Then buy! There is no question you have social gathering ahead of you. Wouldn’t it be nice to take along a wine you’ve found, and love? Sure!!
To help you with your wine tasting, here’s a helpful video; Winetasting 101: How To Taste Wine; very, very straightforward easy to under stand. For a direct, approach, this is more structured video presentation and included some elements seemingly new that will be used going forward, here.
Be sure to take along friends. We tend to be safer, drive more responsibly, and have a generally more wonderful time when with friends.
Now onto this week’s options to taste, enjoy and absolutely be safe!

An Oregon focus, and a few incredible red wines for the money from Italy and Patagonia.
1) St. Innocent Winery 2011 Pinot Gris, Vitae Springs Vineyard. $18.99
A great local wine to serve with grilled Salmon.
2) Soter -North Valley Highland Rosé 2011 $21.99 (Oregon -Pinot Noir)
Nice aromatics of fresh strawberries, a last hurrah from our summer past.
3) Brooks 2010 Willamette Valley Pinot Noir $21.99
A perfect balance of fruit, structure and acidity–with red fruits, cinnamon, mushroom, and cedar.
4) “Denario” Pinot Noir 2011 $14.99 Rio Negro, Patagonia, Argentina
This is a spicy, mineral-driven Pinot Noir from Argentina.
5) Scarzello– 2010 Langhe Rosso $17.99 Piemonte, Italy (Nebbiolo)
Bright, fresh, this really delivers Piedmont character, a steal at this price. (Lilac and honeysuckle meet tar and roses.)
6) Nervi ‘Spanna’ Coste della Sesia $14.99 Piemonte, Italy. (90% Nebbiolo and 10% Vespolina)
An incredible deal from Northern Piedmont, I had this wine open for 3 days and it kept getting more and more interesting, savory and complex. This will age well, and is terrific now, serve with antipasti, mushroom pasta dishes, and grilled meats.

“For you I’ll get right to our main event, which is a riff on our semi-regular “World’s Greatest $15 Red Wines” tasting, which as I’ve said before is one of my favorite Friday Flights to do. This time we’re going all old world with it, because frankly with the number of amazing values I come across I could do about 6 of these. And for those of you who are more western hemispheric, we’ll be doing the same for wines on this side of the pond soon. But tomorrow will be all about France, Spain, and Italy, and the wines will be rather impressive for their various modest price tags. Even the bonus-bonus, a stunning Chateauneuf du Pape, is staggeringly good for $45. It is the holidays. Perhaps it’s tome to treat yourselves to something special? Just putting that out there, along with these…..”
–2009 CHATEAU MILLEGRAND Minervois (SW France) $13.95
–2008 BODEGAS PINUAGA Tempranillo “Nature” (Spain) $14.95…90 pts-Wine Avocate
–2007 SOLARIA Rosso di Montalcino (Tuscany) $13.95
–2009 DOMAINE DES FORGES Anjou Rouge-Cab Franc “Les 3C” (Loire Valley) $14.95
–2009 CELLER CAN BLAU Montsant (Spain) $16.95
And then Europe’s Greatest $22, $24, and $45 Red Wines…..
–2005 CELLERS UNIO Priorat “Llicorella” (Spain) $21.95….91 pts-Wine Spectator
–2008 FRANCO SERRA Barbaresco (Italy) $23.95…a ridiculously excellent Barbaresco for this equally ridiculous price. 90 pts-Wine Spectator
–2010 DOMAINE DE LA COTES DE L’ANGE Chateauneuf du Pape (Rhone Valley) $44.95…Wow! Truly amazing grape juice. 93 points in both Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate
