Bet you haven’t heard of Luke Hickmott, a touring golf professional out of nearby Menlo Park. That’s okay, because he’s actually from Australia and just happens to be living in Northern California and plays out of CordeValle in San Martin, while he pursues his Q-school dreams. Hickmott has advanced to this week’s Final Stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School – in both the U.S. and Europe.
For the past month Hickmott has played in both Stage I and Stage II events of the PGA Tour Q-school and the European Tour Qualifying School. Looks like a unique golf story developing for Northern California golf fans to keep an eye on.
Other Q-schoolers from northern California making it to the final stages are Erik Flores of Grass Valley near Sacramento and Joseph Bramlett, from Saratoga in the Bay Area.
At the LPGA Q-school, Bay Area native Christina Kim, a two-time tour winner who won her first event in Auburn at the then Long’s Drugs Challenge is arguably the headliner. The animated Kim whose tour credits include Solheim Cup appearances and a popular selling book, Swinging from My Heels: Confessions of an LPGA Star, disclosed in a blog this year that she has suffered from depression over the last two years.
Kim Welch from Roseville and a former Golf Channel Big Break winner is also playing in the final stage along with Lisa Ferrero (Lodi).
LPGA qualifying tournament is a 90-hole event while the PGA Tour event is a 108-hole tournament. Stay tuned.
One nearby player not participating in the q-school is James Hahn. Hahn finished in fifth place on the Web.com Tour to earn his PGA Tour card for next season.
