Before “The Expendables 2” even hit theaters, producer Avi Lerner shared who he had in mind for cast expansion in the then unconfirmed third installment, “The Expendables 3.” At that point his statements seemed a bit premature, and his proposed cast members certainly seemed overly ambitious – he stated,
We’ve approached Clint Eastwood to be one of the guys, we’ve got a character in mind for him. We’re talking to Harrison Ford. [And we want] Wesley Snipes when he comes back from prison. I’ll give you one more name, we’ve got Nicolas Cage to play [one of the characters].
Lerner’s bold statements were immediately supported by the enormous success of “The Expendables 2,” as it earned an impressive $289 million dollar worldwide gross, which almost certainly guaranteed that we would get to see Stallone and his band of 80′s action stars once again on the big-screen. Nearly every notable action star from the last thirty years has been featured in the cast or is rumored to be on-board for the next installment, but Nicolas Cage and Steven Seagal have been the names most frequently mentioned.
Yesterday, November 4, 2012, Stallone himself (via his Facebook account) has confirmed Nicolas Cage’s involvement and his desire to add Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke to the cast in the upcoming movie. In all likelihood we won’t know what role Cage will play in the upcoming film for a while, but it seems quite likely that he will be the will be the new villain, as his build doesn’t really match the tremendously muscular physiques of the other “Expendables” cast members. Stallone’s full announcement regarding Cage and the other potential cast members is below:
“We are preparing the film with the same passion and commitment as the previous two. We have confirmed Nicolas Cage, a master actor who gives a veneer intellectual group. Hopefully we can realize to Harrison Ford, Wesley Snipes and Mickey Rourke. That is the great mission of the producer. We will continue with the same narrative scheme, the agility and the frenzy, which are inherent to the saga. What will definitely be the last? I can not guarantee. In principle it would be two deliveries, but the affection of the people encouraged us to work on a third. I guess as long as we amused ourselves by offering fun and people, we can continue playing ‘The Expendables’. For now we are not as expendable as it should and as some critics want.”
UPDATE: Despite confirmation from nearly all major Hollywood news outlets, Stallone has refuted rumors that Cage is on board for the third installment The news initially came from a Stallone Facebook account that appeared so legitimate that it fooled Hollywood news outlets. That being said, there is still a strong possibility that Cage will have a role in the film.
