Colin Kaepernick vs Drew Brees
The story of the NFL weekend is that Colin Kaepernick has been named starter for the 49ers against the Saints. He has been seeing spot duty all season long but Kaepernick was thrust into the lineup due to the concussion that Alex Smith attained against the St. Louis Rams. Kaepernick thrived in his first start as an NFL quarterback against the vaunted Chicago Bears defense. On Sunday evening he leads San Francisco into hostile territory for his first ever road start.
The New Orleans Saints started the season with four straight losses. Now they have a chance to get their record above 500 with a home victory over the 49ers. They are on a three game winning streak and a win against San Francisco will give them the confidence to earn a playoff bid. The Saints have a tough schedule down the stretch. Every team left on the schedule is in the playoff hunt except one.
Colin Kaepernick gives the 49ers a little extra excitement when he takes the field. He has big play ability with his legs as well as his arm. He moves with ease and controlled the pocket against the Bears. What’s even better about Kaepernick, is that he throws the ball with pin point precision. We don’t know if this is a full time move, but if Colin plays well on Sunday, he might have the starting job for the rest of the season. Colin Kaepernick gets to go against the worst defense in the league even though they’ve been playing better during the winning streak. The 49ers will use the running game to offset any type of pressure the Saints may bring.
Drew Brees does everything for the New Orleans Saints and he has helped keep the team together during the bounty investigation. Brees has thrown for 28 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The Saints spread the ball around to many targets including tight end Jimmy Graham. Graham leads the Saints with eight touchdown receptions. The running game has been better as of late, but they still rely heavily on the passing game.
The Saints are far superior when it comes to defense and that should be the reason that they win the game. Only problem for the 49ers is that the Saints are on a mission, and for this game at least it’s time to throw out the stats. Both teams are different than they were at the start of the season, so this is a true benchmark game. For that reason the Saints are going to win an exciting high scoring affair.
