It’s been apparent from the beginning that there were unresolved feelings between Rayna and Deacon but now it looks like Teddy has a little something on the side in the fourth episode of “Nashville,” entitled “We Live in Two Different Worlds.” The episode aired Wednesday night, Oct. 31, at 9 p.m.
As the show opens, Rayna James (Connie Britton) is in bed with Deacon Claybourne (Charles Eston) but it is only a dream. Fans will have to wait and see if that actually comes to pass.
Rayna’s sister, Tandy (Judith Hoag) informs Rayna that her husband Teddy’s (Eric Close) campaign has slipped by 12 points and would benefit from a singing appearance by Rayna at a fundraiser the next evening. Ever the dutiful wife, Rayna agrees. Her manager contacts Deacon to see if he will join her. Though he is supporting the other candidate, Coleman Carlisle (Robert Ray Wisdom), he thinks Rayna needs him and agrees to be there.
When Rayna arrives at the Country Club, a place she loathes, she is surprised to see Peggy (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) there and it is clear the two women have no love lost for one another. Rayna chides Teddy about Peggy being there and he assures her that was 15 years ago. Rayna asks him why he married her and he says it’s because she dazzles him and always has.
As show time draws near, Rayna is nervous because the people she will be performing for are the same ones who laughed at her in high school. Her nerves are not helped by Teddy and her daddy’s incessant badgering over the a fact that Deacon is late.
Deacon shows up and Lamar (Powers Boothe) and Teddy start in on him right away about being late, about how he is dressed and about having carried him for 20 years. Deacon lashes out calling Teddy a straw man for Lamar and that all of Nashville knows it. Rayna has to intervene to stop the fight.
During Rayna’s performance, Peggy makes eye contact with Teddy across the room and nods toward the door. He shakes his head no but there is definitely something going on between them.
Back in her room, Rayna and Deacon have it out. When he asks what that was all about, Rayna says it was about you taking the bait. He says he was only there to help her because he thought she needed him. She says she did and he doesn’t know what to do with that. Rayna says ‘and now I have to go him.” Deacon just leaves and the friendship is strained to its limits.
At home, Teddy tells Rayna he can’t deal with it anymore, that he is her husband. Rayna says with a weary voice that she is going to fire him.
Later, teddy meets Peggy in a secluded parking lot and steps into her vehicle. She talks about how uncomfortable she was at the fundraiser and wonders if they shouldn’t just come clean now. He adamantly says no and reminds her that his campaign, as well as both of their marriages, is on the line.
So while we’ve known about the feelings between Rayna and Deacon for some time, it appears Rayna gas stood by her husband despite the temptations. Can we be sure the same can be said of Teddy?
