3 out of 4 Movie Beans
Starring: Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike and Robert Duvall
When James Barr is accused of using the marksman skills he learned in the army to kill five innocent people from a parking garage, the only thing he has to say to the police is ‘Get Jack Reacher’. As far as the United States is concerned, Jack Reacher (Cruise) doesn’t exist. He is a ghost who leaves no paper trail. But, when he shows up asking questions about the murders allegedly committed by James Barr, he proves to be quite real. After finding evidence that no one else could on a crime Barr committed during the war, Reacher now delves into this mystery to discover the truth. Did Barr really commit this heinous crime or did someone else frame him? If so, why carefully frame someone for a series of killings with random victims? With Jack Reacher on the case, you can be sure the truth will be uncovered.
I wasn’t sure what to expect coming in to this movie, but I left feeling fully entertained. Tom Cruise is in his element, combining action with real world humour. Without trying to be funny, his character brings the audience anywher from chuckles to an uproar of laughter in almost every scene. The plot was suspenseful, there were chases, gun play and sexual tensions galore. Without giving anything away, I’m really happy about the way they handled the tension between Cruise and Pike’s character. The relationship was well played out. Due to the nature of the start of the film and the recent shootings, the premier date of the film was pushed back. As the entire world grieves for the victims of school shooting in Connecticut, I believe the studios made a very wise choice. However, the release date has been unchanged and you could feel some tension after the scene where the gunman kills several people. The energy will never be great after a scene like that in a theatre, but it somehow seemed heavier than normal. I felt it and so did my movie companion. Having said that, the film was still completely entertaining. I would definitely suggest adding it to your list of movies to see this holiday season, especially if you get tired of the old Christmas classics.
Special Movie Bean Salute: Robert Duvall, he does a great job in his role and is pretty spunky for a dude in his 80s!
