Miss USA, Olivia Culpo is the new Miss Universe 2012. The gorgeous, Rhode Island contestant edged out the competition – 88 other beauties – to win the coveted crown and title.
The show, which aired lived from the Planet Hollywood Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, featured various segments, including swimsuit, national costumes and evening wear. The 89 ladies dwindled down to 16 semi-finalists after the elimination rounds.
These semi-finalists included Miss USA – Olivia Culpo, Miss Venezuela – Irene Sofia Esser Quintero, Miss France- Marie Payet, Miss Turkey – Cagil Ozge Ozkul, Miss Peru – Nicole Faveron, Miss Russia – Elizabeth Golovanova, Miss Kosovo- Diana Avdiu, Miss India – Shilpa Singh, Miss Poland – Marcelina Zawadzka, , Miss Brazil – Gabriela Markus, Miss South Africa – Melinda Bam, Miss Mexico – Karina Gonzalez, Miss Philippines – Janine Tugonon, Miss Croatia – Elizabeta Burg, Miss Australia – Renae Ayris and Miss Hungary Agnes Konkoly.
As gorgeous as the contestants were, this year’s gowns were not as remarkable. A few interesting ones; the typical sequined numbers; and of course, there is always one lady whose gown reminds one of a wedding dress. Nothing extraordinary, except for Miss USA’s dress, a beautiful red Georges Hobeika Fall/Winter 2012/13 couture gown featuring a deep, plunging neckline. With those bodies, however, bedazzled potato sacks will be flattering, so all was not lost. During the evening gown competition, the finalists were serenaded by Train, while the rest of the contestants ‘showed their support’ in the background.
And then there were five. Miss Australia, Miss USA, Miss Venezuela, Miss Philippines and Miss Brazil. From the tight sequin minis to the grand finale, the show was all the usual glitz and glam. Stunning girls, perfectly coiffed hair, flawless makeup, sky-high heels and the perfect walk. Nothing was out of place. Still, only one could be crowned winner.
Miss Universe 2011, Angola’s Leila Lopes, crowned an excited Culpo, who now starts her year-long term, otherwise known as finally living her dream. Culpo will receive a salary, a lavish wardrobe and other prizes, including a luxe New York apartment. She is the first American to win Miss Universe since Brook Lee won the title in 1997.
Miss Philippines, won 1st runner up and Miss Venezuela, 2nd runner up.
The Miss Universe competition was hosted by Giuliana Rancic, Andy Cohen, and stylist, Jeannie Mai. The judges’ panel included CeeLo Green, Nigel Barker, Scott Disick, Pablo Sandoval, and Kerri Walsh Jennings, among others.
