Enjoy the eggnog while you can afford it because the price of milk is very likely to rise maybe to as much as $7 a gallon next month. That means everything made with milk will also go up. Soon Wisconsin cheddar and Monterrey jack from California will be more expensive than imported French Brie.
Who do we thank for this? Republicans in the House of Representatives—the very same Republicans who remain on vacation 4 days before every American gets a tax increase and the long-term unemployed lose their benefits.
The reason is the House has not passed a Farm Bill even though the Senate sent them one month ago. It expires December 31st and under federal law, the Agricultural Department will be forced to buy milk from farmers at inflated prices set in 1949. That is expected to result in the price consumers pay for milk to go up to between $6 and $8 a gallon in January.
Sooner or later grocery chains will begin buying cheaper milk from Canada and New Zealand putting American dairy farmers out of business. This out-sourcing is being forced by the Republican House of Representatives.
A lot of other bad things happen on New Years Eve. First of all, we are more than likely to go over the fiscal cliff increasing taxes on every American. In addition, there will be draconian cuts in every federal program including the safety net programs people depend on to live. Education, research, law enforcement—every program gets cut. Even defense spending is not spared.
In addition, the wind energy tax credit will expire putting at least 37,000 Americans now employed in the wind energy industry out of work and dumping hundreds of tons of carbon pollution into the atmosphere every year.
Food Stamp funding will also be cut. Funding for food stamps is part of the same Farm Bill the House refuses to pass.
Wednesday when the markets open, billions of dollars of wealth will be wiped out if stock prices fall the way they are expected to after we go over the cliff.
And to add salt to our wounds, wealthy farmers (corporations) will continue to get the $24 billion in subsidies that the Senate eliminated in the Farm Bill they passed on a bi-partisan basis but the House Republicans will not allow a vote on.
The Farm Bill not being passed does other bad things. Funding for drought relief is in the bill. The drought, caused largely by climate change, has engulfed over half the nation. Small farmers and ranchers have been hurt if not wiped out. The economies of affected farm communities are hurt. Food prices have already gone up due to the drought. No federal relief for them.
Late Thursday Speaker Boehner said the House would return on December 30th–Sunday. They have 29 hours to do something. They had two years and did nothing so what will they do in 29 hours?
This is government Republican Tea Party style.
