With the release of the 2012 Doernbecher x Nike Freestyle Collection fast approaching, Doernbecher Children’s Hosptial has released a video Wednesday detailing the events that led young Chad Berg to become a part of the program (link). Because of a terrible kayaking accident that left him in freezing cold water for over an hour and a half, Berg showed no signs of life before he was eventually rescued. It would take the hard work and dedication of the people who saved Berg and the team at Doernbecher to bring him back.
Berg was chosen to design the Nike Air Force 1, the iconic silhouette which is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary this year. The goal of the program is create a sneaker that truly expresses the feelings of the child and Berg chose to go with a variety of influences such as the University of Oregon, his favorite college team.
Here is Berg’s story as told by Nike:
“Last January, Chad Berg (15) took a spill in his kayak and spent 90 minutes in the icy water. By the time he was rescued, he was in full cardiac arrest with no pulse and an internal temperature of 73 degrees. Essentially, he was lifeless. After nearly three hours of CPR, the medical team transferred Chad to Doernbecher and put him on a machine that could do the work for his heart and lungs while he recovered. Incredibly, he was back in action within two weeks with no neurological damage at all. Chad’s Air Force 1 design features green accents to pay tribute to his favorite collegiate team (the UO Ducks), carbon fiber panels, a glow-in-the-dark outsole, and his favorite saying on the sockliner: ‘The people who turn out the best are those people who make the best out of the way things turn out.’”
The Nike Air Force 1 “Doernbecher” will be available on Nov. 30 at select Nike Store locations and on their online store. All proceeds from the sales of the shoes will go to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
