Dan and JoAnn Davey, animal lovers extraordinaire, have been Animal Rescue Foundation, Illinois (ARF-IL) volunteers in Wheaton, Illinois for the past three years. While this couple works extremely hard doing what they do for the local animals, they have also been Best Friends volunteers since 2005!
JoAnn is a nurse and one of her patients mentioned to her seven years ago about Best Friends Animal Society (BFAS) in Kanab, Utah and the involvement that the patient had with BFAS. The idea of this type of volunteer work appealed to JoAnn so she looked Best Friends up on the internet. Later that year, JoAnn and Dan took a trip to The Sanctuary; volunteering for a week that first year. For the past six years afterward, the Daveys have volunteered their time for two weeks during each summer.
Before the trip this summer, JoAnn decided it was time that she attempt to regain some female control over her male dominated household, so she began the process of searching for the perfect little girl that she could dress up and love. At first she looked at all of the puppies but that did not work in her favor, so she looked at the various age groups and did not exactly find what she was looking for.
Still determined to locate herself a little girl to call all her own, JoAnn looked at the Guardian Angel portion of the Best Friend’s website. There she found her Minka.
As reported before, Minka had many issues. She was about five-years old and had many medical issues that most individuals would refuse to take on for one reason or another. This dog was literally a miracle in the making because she was severely underweight (only six pounds); coming to Best Friends straight from the streets of L.A. Her front legs had terrible issues; she walked on her first joint and not on her paws. Best Friends decided that this part-Poodle was young enough to fix her legs – sparing her from the rare condition that made her legs develop that way in the first place.
She was a very popular rescue; about 23 or 24 updates appeared about her before her adoption on the Guardian Angels portion of the website. This elegant little girl had captured the hearts of many. JoAnn and Dan were just lucky enough to want to add her to their family.
So when they visited, Christy, their main contact, arranged for Minka to meet the humans and their other canine companions and do a sleepover. Minka fit right in. In fact, she walked straight up to the entire family as if she owned the place, barked her orders and let the male dogs know that she was the new queen to be revered. They seemed to accept their new place in the family and afterward Minka only went back to Christy at Best Friends when Dan and JoAnn did their volunteer hours at The Sanctuary.
Minka’s surgery has been successful although she will continue to wear both socks and shoes for the balance of her life. She still has ACL surgery to look forward to, but is doing great with the Davey family. In fact, she is still in charge of the household and insists on accompanying Dan to work at The Spotted Paw Shop where she had adopted Mike and Cris Zloza and their Izzy and Aurora as her newest ‘best friends’ from Wheaton! It is no wonder as the Zlozas are two of the kindest animal lovers that you could ever possibly meet and since the inception of The Spotted Paw just over a year ago, they have given more to this community than most individuals do in an entire lifetime!
Dan and JoAnn Davey want the public to realize this about Minka and the other animals that they have adopted over the years:
· They completely believe in adoptions, although before Best Friends and ARF-IL, they only had dogs from breeders.
· There are way too many kill shelters still available throughout the U.S.
· Best Friends takes in the hardest-to-place dogs – like Minka – and they do their best to help them out and place them in loving, forever homes.
This small, cutesy girl is so popular that her very own closet will be arriving any day. Not only did the Daveys fall in love with Minka, but so did the rest of her followers from the Best Friends Guardian Angel site and therefore she has been sent a barrage of lovely outfits to be adored in.
Dan and JoAnn Davey are two animal volunteers that the world should aspire to become. Thanks to their loving kindness, animals such as Minka have been given a second chance at life!
