With all the rave going on with BB creams, from drugstore to higher end brands, it seems that these drugstore brand BB creams are making a splash in the United States. If you are wondering what is a BB cream is, BB cream stands for Beauty Balm or Blemish Balm that is widely known in Asia as an all in one product. BB creams acts as a foundation, primer and moisturizer in one. Most Asia BB creams are full coverage. So how many times have you seen Maybelline’s commercial for this BB cream? I know I have seen it dozens of times. So I decided to pick up Maybelline’s Dream Fresh BB 8-in-1 Skin Perfector. Let’s get into this review, shall we?
So as you have read in most of my reviews, my favorite drugstore to pick up products from is Walgreens because that store is right down the street from me. When I first saw this product, I immediately fell in love with the color range. As we know with foundations, the variety of colors from women with fair tone skin to women of color can be hard to find. There were multiple shades available. The shades are Light 100, Light/Medium 110, Medium 120, Medium/Deep 130 and Deep 140. The shade I am in is Deep Sheer Tint 140. The Deep Sheer Tint 140 has a reddish color tone to it and it is perfect for those who have rosy undertones. But I am pretty sure you will find your color with this product as there in between colors.
The price for it was $7.99, but with the coupon I had, which was a $1 off, I bought it for $6.99 without tax. The product is 30 ml, which is 1.0 fl oz and that price even without the coupon is pretty good for the amount of product you are getting. According to Maybelline’s website, it blurs imperfections, brightens and evens the skin tone, smooth, hydrates and enhances the skin. It is an SPF 30 non-oily formula.
The packaging is super cute! The consistency of this product is not really thick, but the consistency is a little runny. How does it smell? It has a very faint smell almost odorless. On Maybelline’s website, it says to “apply smoothly and evenly to your face and blend with your fingertips”. I tried it this way first and it did not give me the finish I was looking for. Next, I tried it with a sponge. That was a still a no go. Last, but not least, I used my ELF powder brush. I had the perfect finish! You really have to experiment with different techniques to see which one works best for you.
I do have oily to combination skin and I just know I need to set my makeup with a setting powder or I will look very greasy by the end of the day. And when I say very greasy, I mean like I was baking in the oven and was cooked type of greasy look. And the oil will just sizzle out of my skin. If you are my skin type, then you know what I am talking about. The powder I did set it with was ELF’s high definition powder. That is my go to powder when I want my makeup to stay in place all day.
But with this product, it was different. About an hour pass and my face is just oozing with oil. It was a good thing I carried blotting sheets in my purse because I was constantly blotting my face. I know I wore this BB cream for a good 2 hours before I had to wash it off. There is something in this BB cream that is oil producing even though it says oil-free. I was so disappointed because the finish was absolutely perfect. The shade was my exact skin tone.
So I tried it once again a few days later, but this time with the L’Oreal Magic Lumi primer. I thought maybe I need to use a primer with this BB cream including with my setting powder to make it last. I tried it and it was a complete fail, just like the first time. I had someone to ask me how the coverage on this BB cream was. I would say the coverage on it is light, like a tinted moisturizer, which to me it is compared to since I have heard about Asia BB creams.
Do not, I repeat, do not expect this product to be full coverage. If you are looking for that then this is not the product for you. If you really want to try this product out, then apply a concealer to the areas where you want to cover up acne scars or anything like that. So this BB cream is a no go for me and I truly tried to make this product work. I guess it is a “you get what you paid for” type of deal. The only time I would use this BB cream again is if I am going to run an errand, quick in and out. But for an evening out, no way would I use this product. This product would probably be great for normal to dry skin, but those who have oily to combination skin could have a problem with it like I did. Here are my pros and cons:
- Variety of color shades
- High SPF
- Price is very budget friendly
- Consistency feels very nice on the skin
- Light coverage
- Oily to combination skin types need to apply a primer and then set it with a setting powder or it will melt off the skin
Well, that brings my review to a close. If you have tried it, let me know in the comments section below!
