Minnesota’s Golden Gophers come off an important non-conference sweep that happened versus the Catamounts of Vermont last weekend in Burlington. They come home to fellow WCHA foe Nebraska-Omaha and the Mavericks who are coached by Dean Blais. Let’s take you “inside the numbers.”
12: Minnesota has outshot its opponents in twelve of the year’s opening thirteen games. The game where they were outshot was on November 3rd, versus the Mavericks of Minnesota State. Minnesota was outshot 35-28 in that game.
139: The number of points scored by current UNO head coach and former Gopher Dean Blais. Blais had fifty-six goals and eighty-three assists in his playing career from 1970-1973.
8: Minnesota’s Adam Wilcox has eight wins in eleven decisions, making him the only WCHA goalie with eight wins. He also has a fourth-best 1.46 GAA in the nation.
1: Last weekend was full of firsts for Minnesota’s AJ Michaelson, who scored his first career point on Friday night via an assist and then had his first collegiate goal (the game-winner) on Saturday night in Burlington.
7: Minnesota’s Adam Wilcox has allowed one goal or fewer in seven games this season. That includes two shutouts.
1/21/2012: Before last Friday and Adam Wilcox’s point, you have to go back to January 21st, 2012 to find the last time a goaltender was credited with an assist. Kent Patterson was that goaltender.
3: The difference between converted power plays for the two teams this weekend. Minnesota has fourteen conversions in sixty-one attempts while UNO is eleven of fifty. They’re ranked ninth and tenth respectively in the nation.
3:20: Of all 786:43 that Minnesota goaltenders have played this year, they’ve only been off the ice in any situation for just under three and a half minutes. Two words: tired legs. That’s coming from a goaltender, folks.
2.03: UNO’s John Faulkner boasts that impressive GAA number given over there on the left. That’s second in the WCHA (behind Minnesota’s Adam Wilcox) and Faulkner is 7-0-1 in eight games.
