The murderous Manhattan nanny who brutally killed little Lucia Krim and her baby brother Leo plead not guilty on Wednesday. The nanny who tried to commit suicide on that fateful day left those poor babies in the bloodied bathtub for their mother to find.
Yoselyn Ortega, lying handcuffed in her hospital room pleaded not guilty through her attorney Valeria Van Leer-Greenberg. Ortega stands accused of savagely stabbing the two children to death.
Valerie Van Leer-Greenberg told Judge Lewis Bart Stone, “I ask you to enter a not guilty plea on behalf of my client. My client remains profoundly, medically impaired and in need of medical attention.
Ortega is still hospitalized from the self-inflicted wounds from her suicide attempt. Prior to her attempt, she repeatedly stabbed and slit the throats of Lucia Krim, 6 and her brother Leo Krim, 2.
During the 10 minute hearing which was held in Ortega’s hospital room, the Judge, two prosecutors, and Ortega’s attorney had to wear hospital gowns over their clothing. Judge Stone ordered Ortega held without bail.
Ortega is currently undergoing psychiatric exams while she recuperates from her wounds. The Manhattan nanny was breathing on her own but still had a tube leading to her throat.
District attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr. announced an indictment charging Yoselyn Ortega with multiple counts of murder. In his statement, Vance offered his condolences to the family of the murdered children.
“This crime shocked and horrified parents around the city, many of whom entrust their children to the care of others both by necessity and by choice. My heart goes out to the family of those beautiful young children, and I hope that, with time, this family will heal.”
Ortega’s sister, Celia Ortega spoke to The New York Post stating that even her family didn’t understand why she killed the children. “She snapped. We don’t understand what happened to her mind.”
William Krim, Lucia and Leo’s grandfather also didn’t understand. He told the New York Times, “We’re just the most stunned people in the world. I mean, they treated this woman so well.”
