Life doesn’t come with an instruction book. Fortunately, unlife does, in local Denver author Dave Flomberg’s new detailed instruction manual for working with the undead, “Management for Zombies.”
In this literary tour-de-force, Flomberg seamlessly blends the obscure wisdom of Sun Tzu (“My God, it’s so messy in here. Someone get a mop or something”) with Mary Magdalene (“I dunno. I mean, I don’t really like labels, ya know? Can’t we just go with ‘friends with benefits?’”) and George Romero to craft a managerial manifesto of such raw wit, imaginary brilliance, and corporate American know-how that you’ll gladly trade in your MBA and that useless soul of yours for a brain-dead and ravening workforce. Also, there are zombies.
You can join the author and a whole host of the undead for the “Management for Zombies” launch party this Thursday night, November 29th, at 7:00 p.m. at The Thin Man Tavern, 2015 E. 17th Ave. Parkway in Denver. There will be zombies, finger food, and illustrator Nate Nichols will be on hand to do zombie caricatures. Be there or be zombie fodder.
“Management for Zombies” is a not-at-all-tongue-in-cheek example of the kind of literary humor the world needs more of. It’s an instruction manual for how to manage employees in a corporate environment… y’know, if those employees were reanimated corpses with a taste for human flesh.
It’s light-hearted and cynical by turns, giving advice on how to keep your undead employees happy while also squeezing every last drop of efficiency out of them. It’s timely too, with the Walmart Black Friday debacle just behind us, the high unemployment rate, and workers’ rights a hot-button issue.
But mostly, “Management for Zombies” is just entertaining. It’s absurdly funny and smart. Blink and you’ll miss some of the witticisms, and you’ll be rolling on the floor for others. Essentially, it’s a how-to book for those who never step foot in that section of the bookstore. Whether you work in a cubicle or crack the whip over your white-collar slaves, you’ll find more than a little to relate to in “Management for Zombies.”
Denver zombiephiles will know author Dave Flomberg as a former Rocky Mountain News columnist and all-around good guy. He has been writing in Colorado for almost twenty years, and you can find his work in such illustrious publications as Downbeat Jazz Magazine, Boulder Weekly, Citysearch.com, Yellow Scene Magazine, Westword and rootshed.com.
From the table of contents to the footnotes to the sensible application of schadenfreude, there’s no part of “Management for Zombies” that isn’t spit-milk-out-your-nose funny.
