Two California ski resorts are now open and more are preparing to get the 2012-13 season underway.
On Thursday, Mammoth Mountain ski resort along the Eastern California border began running its lifts for the first time this season and has a party-atmosphere weekend planned.
In Lake Tahoe, Boreal ski resort will reopen tonight (Nov. 10) following a few snow days earlier in the week. Boreal, which opened for six days in October, will open on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and remain open that evening until 9 p.m. The delayed opening will allow Boreal’s snowmaking crew to build a substantial snow base and provide skiers and riders ideal conditions.
On Sunday, Boreal will operate daily from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. and is hoping to maintain those hours on a regular basis. However, operating hours, lifts, terrain and pricing are subject to change as conditions change. All base area services will be available, including ski school lessons beginning on Sunday.
“The season is starting off with a bang up here at Boreal,” stated Jon Slaughter, Boreal Marketing Director. “We were able to open in October which is always our goal, and with this storm we hope to be up and running for the season.”
At Northstar ski resort, the projected opening of Friday, Nov. 16 looks very likely. Northstar got 6-12 inches of snow at lower elevations on Thursday.
“And we’ve got more snow at the top,” Northstar spokesperson Davy Ratchford told Sacramento’s KCRA TV on Friday. We hope to have quite the opening. It will kick off the season and get us in the flow.”
While this week’s snow has many Lake Tahoe ski resorts contemplating earlier opening dates, Mammoth Mountain is up and running. The resort’s first chairs were spinning in the morning, providing access to 6-12 inches of natural and manmade snow.
Mammoth has chairs 1 and 3 open for skiing and snowboarding, servicing 1,000 vertical feet of terrain. With more snow on the way expected over the weekend, the resort’s planned celebration is set to go off.
