The male-stripper drama “Magic Mike” made a big debut by bumping the comedy “That’s My Boy” from the No. 1 spot for movies on demand from October 22 to October 28, 2012, according to Rentrak. Channing Tatum and Matthew McConaughey lead the cast of “Magic Mike,” a dramatic story about the life of a male stripper with the stage name Magic Mike (played by Tatum), who dreams of starting his own custom-furniture business but finds it difficult to leave behind the easy money and fast-paced lifestyle of being a stripper. Along the way, he finds himself mentoring a younger man named Adam (played by Alex Pettyfer) who becomes his co-worker at the strip club. The movie was a hit with critics and audiences.
“Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection” debuted at No. 2. Tyler Perry’s cranky grandmother character Madea is back. This time, she’s going into witness protection and experiences culture shock when when she has to go undercover with a very straight-laced family. Eugene Levy and Denise Richards co-star in this comedy. Perry’s movies are usually disliked by critics but they are usually moderate hits with the public. “Madea’s Witness Protection” is no exception.
“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” bowed at No. 3. In this horror thriller, Andrew Walker plays Abraham Lincoln, who as a young man, is recruited to be a vampire hunter to avenge his mother’s death, since she was killed by a vampire cult. When Lincoln becomes a politician, he leaves vampire hunting behind until a series of events compels him to go back to being a vampire hunter. This movie bombed with critics and at the box office.
“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” dropped from No. 2 to No. 4. Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith and David Schwimmer are among the voice cast in this third film in the animated “Madagscar” series about a group of lovable zoo animals. In “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” the animals are stranded in Europe and find themselves joining a circus as a way to get back to New York City. The critically acclaimed “Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted” was a box-office blockbuster and one of the highest-earning animated films of 2012.
“That’s My Boy” took a big plunge from No. 1 to No. 5. In this raunchy comedy, Adam Sandler plays Donny Berger the immature, estranged father of an uptight twentysomething son (played by Andy Samberg) who is about to get married. When Donny was a teenager, he fathered the son during an illicit affair with a school teacher, who was subsequently imprisoned, leaving Donny to raise the child by himself. The affair made Donny a minor celebrity, and he hopes to cash in on the reunion with his son. Critics hated this movie, which was also a box-office flop.
