After indulging in all the holiday calories this month, what better way to start anew and get your body back on the right track than with macrobiotic cuisine at M Café? Designed to promote cleansing and detoxification, all the food is made without any refined sugars, dairy, eggs, meat, or poultry, with an emphasis on whole, natural foods that are in season. The best part is that despite being so healthy for you, it’s also delicious! That’s because Corporate Executive Chef Shigefumi Tachibe and Consulting Chef Lee Gross, along with their team of cooks, make everything from scratch, ensuring the high quality, flavor, and integrity of every dish. It’s no wonder M Café is favorite to A-list celebrities, such as Anne Hathaway, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Kate Bosworth, Jake Gylenhaal, and more.
Starting with their deli case selections, like their signature salads, such as Kale with Spicy Peanut Dressing, Scarlet Quinoa and Sesame Soba Noodle Salad, they are all fresh and fantastic! The great thing is unlike some deli case selections you’ll find, these are super fresh and maintain their crispness and excellent flavor, like they were just made. That’s because everything at M Café is of the highest quality, and they take great care in making sure you’re getting only the freshest ingredients. I really enjoyed these salads. They were all delicious, and best of all I felt great eating them, as I knew I was also doing my body good…no guilt here! This is bonus after all the holiday eating.
They also offer new salads now for winter, including a Cannellini Bean & Kale Salad, Roasted Broccoli with Flaxseed & Miso, Black Soybean Salad with Orange-Sesame Dressing, Cauliflower “Snow” Salad, Celery Root Remoulade, French Lentil & Radicchio Salad with Maple-Glazed Walnuts & Crumbled Tofu “Chevre”, Kabocha Couscous, Roasted Winter Vegetables, Toasted Farro Salad with Fennel, Walnut & Grapefruit and Winter Roots & Mizuna Salad. I didn’t get a chance to try these, but they all sound wonderful. Be sure to ask which ones are available when you go though, as the winter menu items will be rotated throughout the season.
Another one of my favorites was the Bi-Bim Bop bowl, a signature Korean dish, which I had actually never tried before and fell in love. You have your choice of vegetables, seitan, salmon or black cod, which I chose. Very high in omega 3 fatty acids, black cod is also extremely buttery and delicious! Mixed with Korean-style vegetables, spicy miso sauce and housemade kim chee, this bowl was superb! I really enjoyed it. It leaves you feeling satisfied, but I couldn’t pass up trying their popular Macro Burger.
The Big Macro is a whole grain brown rice and vegetable burger with special sauce, lettuce, soy mozzarella, tomato, pickles, onion and sprouts on a house-baked whole wheat bun. It was so scrumptious and full of flavor that I wasn’t even missing my In-N-Out burger. And again, it’s so healthy, I didn’t feel any guilt…you really can’t get any better than that! It’s a win win! Paired with their amazing Sweet Potato Fries, served with an exquisite chili, sea salt and lime dipping sauce, you really can’t go wrong with the Big Macro Combo.
Don’t skip dessert though, because they offer some excellent pastries. Who says you can’t eat dessert and be healthy at the same time? I tried the Strawberry Shortcake, which was absolutely divine, one of the best I’ve ever tasted. You would never know it was made with no eggs, dairy or refined cane sugar. There was a wheat taste to it, as I believe it’s made with a spelt or whole wheat flour base, which contributes to its wonderful flavor. The whipped cream is tofu-based. All their pastries are made with organic, whole food ingredients and natural grain sweeteners.
You can’t forget their juices either. They offer a variety of fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices, like the Blushing Beauty, which I really enjoyed. Made with red apples, beets, carrots, and fresh mint, it gave me a burst of energy and made me feel very healthy, aside from being fresh and tasty. They are always changing their juices with the season too, so you’ll always find something new.
If you really want to start the new year right and follow through on your resolutions, skip your usual Happy Hour and opt for M Café’s Macro-Hour instead. Available at the Melrose Avenue location, the exclusive Macro-Hour menu is served Monday through Friday from 4-7 pm, and consists of items priced between $6-8, including Mini Mac & Cheese, Crispy Asparagus Spears, Macro Nachos, BBQ Seitan Vietnamese Spring Rolls, and the M-Ranch Wrap. And forget your calorie-packed cocktails. At Macro-Hour, you’ll find “macro-shooter” juice flights. Now that’s one happy hour you’ll walk away from feeling very happy! And your body will thank you for it.
What I loved was that after I had lunch at M Café, it satisfied me for the entire day. I didn’t even have to eat dinner. The macrobiotic cuisine just really leaves you feeling satisfied and best of all, healthy. So don’t wait any longer to kickstart your healthier diet. There are two M Café locations: 7119 Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles and 9433 Brighton Way in Beverly Hills. Remember that Macro-Hour is only offered at the Melrose Ave. location.
