In Las Vegas, a CD release party can be a grand event. Outside a little lounge called Napoleon’s inside the Paris Hotel and Casino dozens of people were gathered. Some people were leaning in the windows taking photos while others were dancing.
It was standing room only at Napoleon’s as Louis Prima Jr. and the Witnesses featuring Sarah Spiegel had their CD release party. The atmosphere was electrifying as the band played high-energy swing music.
The crowd inside Napoleon’s was dancing in their seats as Louis Prima Jr. sang one of the songs his father the great Louis Prima made famous. Louis Prima Sr. is a musician that some might not know his name but they know his music. After all who could forget songs like Jump, Jive An’ Wail, and from the Disney’s Jungle Book I Wan’na Be Like You.
Louis Prima Sr. has deep roots in Las Vegas. Coming to Las Vegas in 1954 he was quick to be called “the best act in Las Vegas”. In 1956 Louis Prima Sr. together with Sam Butera and the Witnesses released a record called the Wildest! Now towards the end of 2012, Louis Prima’s son picks up the mantle with the CD release of Return of the Wildest!
Louis Prima Jr. has kept the style and energy that his father was known for and is introducing it to a new generation. Louis Prima Jr. has surrounded himself with an incredible band.
The Witnesses consist of three horn players, two guitarists, a drummer and a keyboardist, all of which are incredibly talented. The band reminds me of cartoon characters, throughout the night the crazy antics and the facial expressions brought another dimension to the show. It is small things like this that make a great band extraordinary.
Philip Clevinger, the trombonist did a solo while lying on the floor flopping around. Phillip obvious a master of his craft also did a mean James Brown impersonation. Singing and dancing and playing a trombone this man can do it all.
The drummer, A.D. Adams also showcased his talents. Louis Prima Jr. joined A.D. on the drums until Louis Prima Jr. was playing the drums without A.D. Mr. Adams made his way to the front of the stage to rock out, doing his best Mick Jagger impersonation.
As the rest of the band was showing off their talents and getting the crowd hyped up another show was going on in the audience. Robert Nash a well known Robert De Niro impersonator and long time friend of Louis Prima Jr. was sitting in the audience with a few of his friends smoking cigars.
To the crowds outside, it appeared that Robert De Niro, Jack Nicholson, Danny DiVito, Howie Mandel, and the late great Rodney Dangerfield were all in attendance of this great show. The crowd inside was too busy jamming to the music to notice the other show that was happening around them.
Louis Prima Jr. showcased Sarah Spiegel and gave her time to shine. Sarah Spiegel had a melodic voice that entranced the crowd. Like the rest of the band Sarah took her opportunity to impress the crowd by singing an incredibly fast paced Jump Blues song called I Want You To Be My Baby. The crowd was too shocked for reaction while she sang the song, but gave her a standing ovation when she was done with the song.
What an amazing night of live music and fun. Just like his dad, Louis Prima Jr. ended the night with a parade. The band followed Louis out the door and through the corridors of the Paris Hotel and Casino while playing their instruments. Louis and the band stopped at a table to sign autographs and sell copies of their new CD.
