A group of local activists have formed with a pretty lofty goal, to propose and pass an amendment to the United States Constitution. The group was simply called the Mandate Amendment team, founded by two local men, John Niewicki of Uxbridge and Matt O’Brien of Marlboro who both believe it is wrong for the government to mandate its citizens to purchase goods or services from any company. This is what is happening with Obamacare.
Endorsed by the Massachusetts Libertarian Party
This week the Massachusetts Libertarian Party endorsed the group and the amendment. Spokesperson Al Hopfmann stated, “I introduced a Resolution of Endorsement of the Mandate Amendment at a meeting of the State Committee meeting of the Libertarian Association of Massachusetts because it reflects one of the core beliefs of the Libertarian Party. I believe that working on the advancement and acceptance of the Mandate Amendment will promote the cause of restoring liberty in our nation. I intend to challenge other political parties to endorse the ratification and inclusion of the Mandate Amendment into the Constitution of the United States.”
Obamacare and the Mandate Amendment
Niewicki is happy about the endorsement and he hopes this is the first of many as the group is reaching out to people from all areas of the political spectrum. “We are honored to have the backing of the Mass Libertarian Party in this critical initiative” said Mandate Amendment Cofounder John Niewicki, “We understand the precedent set by Chief Justice Roberts in his Obamacare decision allows for politicians to combine power with their corporate backers to force Americans into purchasing products and services of nongovernmental, private organizations. This precedent must be stopped now and requires all groups and parties founded on American values to join together and get this Amendment to the U.S. Constitution passed before it is too late.”
The Mandate Amendment Team’s vision is to restore the fundamental and self-evident right of every American to not purchase the products or services of their fellow citizens. The Team was formed to reverse the corrosive effects of the recent Supreme Court decision ruling that Congress possesses the right to tax citizens into buying the products and services of a private company. It is now conceivable that Congress could pass laws which favor certain companies, services, or products, making it mandatory for citizens to purchase products at whim. This clearly goes against core American principles and opens the door for politicians and corporations to combine power and impose their will upon the American public.
An Uphill Battle
As stated on the group’s website this effort reaches to all citizens, no matter what political party they belong to, or what political philosophy they adhere to. Democrats should be concerned that the government can now force even them to buy things they may not want. In addition it opens the doors for politicians to cater to special interests, which usually consists of large corporations, hurting small businesses and the middle class. Republicans should support the mandate amendment or else they will be perceived as being friends to big business, an image they keep trying to shed.
While Niewicki admits that this group faces an uphill battle and even knows it may take a life time to accomplish, he is confident that the group can recruit enough people who believe Obamacare and any other mandates are just one more case of Americans losing their freedom. As he states “We are in it for the long haul, for our children and grandchildren”
