Below CEO of IH2 Enterprises and owner of Mizizi Naturals, Wilveta Clark shares her personal hair story, advice and inspiration behind Mizizi Naturals.
Hair story …
I started wearing my hair natural approximately 3 years ago. Rapid hair loss was the catalyst to my natural hair journey.
There came a time, over a period of about a year and a half, that with every shampoo and every hair combing, the process would end with me holding a hand full of hair.
It was falling out at the root and consistently breaking from being weak, dry and brittle. This was happening in spite of weekly visits to the salon.
After noticing how much thicker and stronger the new growth hair was when compared to the relaxed hair, I ask myself this question; “Why are you altering the natural state of your hair?”
The simple truth was TRADITION and what I perceived to be socially acceptable. I relaxed my hair only because that was what I was accustomed to for as long as I can remember.
The process went from the smell of burning hair from the hot comb, to the lye burns, and then to the no-lye relaxers every 2-3 months.
This became the ‘norm’ for my life. Except for the 1970’s and 1980’s Jeri-curl or synthetic braids, I was not exposed to many women who wore their hair naturally.
After reflecting on my journey and answering the question ‘why?’ I decided that natural was best for me.
My new journey has also invoked the desire to become more natural both inside and out.
Advice for those contemplating wearing their hair natural …
To those contemplating wearing their hair natural my response would be to ‘go for it’.
Curly hair has so many different textures and each one is beautiful. Embrace your hair with love and learn its versatility.
In the same manner that we accessorize ourselves with jewelry and other adornments, our hair can be an expression of style.
Inspiration behind Mizizi Naturals …
Mizizi Naturals was inspired by a conversation about the use of shea butter and African black soap.
One of my co-workers who is from Sierra Leone, brought these back for me to use after a visit to his homeland.
After suffering for many years with blemishes from adult acne, my skin began to soften and the blemishes began to fade with the use of these two items. I also use shea butter for moisturizing my hair. The natural oils work wonders.
This success prompted me to research shea butter, its properties, its uses and its benefits.
I instantly fell in love with the information that I found, started experimenting with other natural oils, and began sharing with family and friends.
Thus, Mizizi Naturals was implemented as a brand of IH2 Enterprises, LLC (the parent company) with a slogan and logo design.
The Tree in our logo depicts strength and in Swahili, Mizizi means ROOTS.
The two combined embodies our passion to revisit that which God has already given to us naturally. Mizizi uses 100% natural and organic products.
Our base ingredients originate from the continent that has been proven to be the scientific and biblical origin of all people.
So: Treat yourself, Transform a Community and let’s get back to our ROOTS!
Our product line currently consists of whipped shea butters (scented with fragrance or essential oils and unscented) and shea soufflé (creamy version) both can be used for hair and skin, vegan-friendly lip balm, dead-sea bath salts, and liquid black soap.
The scented whipped butter has been the best seller, particularly Island Fruit (coco-mango),
Black Cherry & Almond, Lavender, and Cool Water-type, however, the soufflé is a new edition; so time will tell.
Advice for others interested in starting their own business …
To anyone starting their own business I would say ‘follow your dreams, surround yourself with positive people and separate yourself from the negative naysayers’; research, research and research again; develop a business plan and evaluate the costs.
Also, consider the advice from the Small Business Development Association or similar agencies and talk to others who have a similar business.
One realization that I like to share is this: Opportunities are limitless. It is we ourselves who limit opportunities.
What the future holds for Mizizi Naturals …
My prayer is that Mizizi Naturals continues to grow. We plan to expand the product line to include sugar scrubs, body oils and shampoo.
Our desire is to become a presence on store shelves where natural products are found and to have a strong online sales program.
In March, we are planning a trip to Sierra Leone to establish a network for bulk ivory shea butter and authentic black soap.
We also hope to establish a program to assist women and girls who have been sexually abused both in Sierra Leone and here in the U.S.
This supports our slogan and goal to establish a non-profit foundation: Treat yourself, Transform a community and let’s get back to our ROOTS!
