After a short hiatus for Thanksgiving we are back with more show recommendations this weekend in Austin. Tonight, Hard Proof plays Afrobeat with Adrian Quesada‘s (Grupo Fantasma, Brownout) psych-Cumbia act, Money Chicha. Friday, local post-rock veterans, My Education release their new CD at the ND. Indy rockers, The Couch follow up Saturday with their own CD release at new venue, Holy Mountain. It is a strong weekend for local music at cheap ticket prices. Details on those events and more are listed in our weekend preview below.
Thursday, November 29
Hard Proof, Money Chicha – Sahara Lounge – 9 p.m. – $7
Afrobeat sensations, Hard Proof are back at the Sahara Lounge with new material in hand after completing an EP produced by Adrian Quesada. The release date is not set yet, but you can bet the new material will be in tonight’s setlist. It will be an impromptu dance party with the talented HP players on stage along with Money Chicha (another Grupo/Brownout side project). If you have not heard this act yet, click the link above for a listen.
The Sahara Lounge is known for providing complimentary African BBQ along with a great venue near downtown (Eastside) but without the parking hassles.
Friday, November 30
My Education (CD release), Digital Antique, Clouds Are Ghosts – ND – 9 p.m. – $7
Veteran post-rockers, My Education hit the stage at the ND at 501 Studios on Friday with a new album in hand, “A Drink For All My Friends.” You can stream the album on Spotify here. We have heard the title track live before hearing the recording which is impressive for the sonic soundscapes created, crescendo into intense, guitar driven peaks.
We recently saw the band perform music from their previous album, “Sunrise” remixed as a live score to a silent film at the Alamo Drafthouse. The adapted score sounded incredible and gave the audience a completely new experience in filmgoing.
A photo booth and Drambuie drink specials will be available during the performance. Advance tickets are available at Ticketfly.
HAMM presents Southbound Drive, Shakey Graves, Love Leighs – Antone’s – 8 p.m. – $7
The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians is hosting an event at Antone’s Saturday featuring Southbound Drive and Shakey Graves along with the Love Leighs. The show is a run up to the HAAM Holiday Jamm CD release party at Antone’s on December 12.
We would pay seven bucks just to see Shakey Graves. Southbound Drive just produced a record with producer, Frenchie Smith (The Boxing Lesson) and currently have a single on the KGSR playlist.
More on Southbound Drive from Do512:
“In the fall of 2011 Scott Collins was looking to form a backing band to play behind his original music. Over the course of the next several months, that backing band took on new life and became more than just support, they became: Southbound Drive. Pulling from hard-rock, folk, western, and with a real F-YOU attitude, SBD began to gain traction in the Austin music scene… Currently, SBD is out supporting its first release Agnes, a seven song EP recorded under the guidance of super-producer Chris “Frenchie” Smith, and they currently have a single titled “Mexico” featured on Roger Allen’s Lone Star State of Mind on 93.3 KGSR in Austin.”
