Bonnie McKee, the songwriter behind hits for artists like Katy Perry and Britney Spears, is soon looking to release music of her own. The pop singer-songwriter held a Twitcam chat on Sunday where she gave details about her upcoming album.
McKee promised to TwitCam with fans when she reached over 65 thousand followers on Twitter, which later happened. Her name may not sound familiar yet, but the songs McKee’s co-written, like Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” Spears’ “Hold it Against Me,” Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” among other hits, certainly have been heard around the world. She let fans know that her own music will be poppy as well.
“It’s definitely like big, fun, danceable pop music. [It’s] very ’80s-influenced, kind of like a modern day Blondie, where it’s like dance-pop with some rock undertones,” she said during her Twitcam session.
McKee expressed that she can’t wait for her album to come out. It will actually be her second release since 2004’s Trouble, an ill-fated record she put out under Warner Bros. Records.
“My album is coming along wonderfully. I’m so, so excited. I’ve waited a really long time for this. I was signed when I was sixteen-years-old and I put out [Trouble]. I had a couple of minor things happen, but I ended up being dropped. I was devastated,” she told fans.
McKee still stayed in the music industry after a Hollywood astrologist suggested she keep songwriting. Her big break came in 2010 when she signed with Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald’s Prescription Songs group. From there, McKee she would pen aforementioned hits with Dr. Luke and Max Martin along with recent songs for Christina Aguilera, Ke$ha, and Rita Ora. Among the many tracks she’s co-written, McKee considers Perry’s “Teenage Dream” to be her favorite.
“I think ‘Teenage Dream’ is the best song I’ve written that’s come out. [It’s] something that I had been holding onto for a long time and a lot lyrics in that song were really dear to me and personal,” McKee said her best friend’s hit.
Concerning the upcoming album, McKee told fans, “I’m really working hard day and night to finally start to use my best ideas on myself.” The red-haired singer also revealed that she worked with the Prescription hit team, producer Greg Kurstin, Teddybears’ Joakim Åhlund, and boyfriend Oliver “Oligee” Goldstein on some new material.
“You can expect to hear some of my new music early next year. I’m gonna finish up some songs from my record and I’m going to shoot some videos, which I’m really excited about. I’m hoping to put the videos out by late January. I can’t wait for you to hear it!” she ended.
